War is Hell Yet Rated Teen – Tech-Gaming Reviews Battlefield: Bad Company

We have to question one of developer DICE’s design
decisions. Their latest Xbox 360 and PS3 title rests on the premise that a
group of soldiers are treated as expendable by the U.S. military, a theme that
is uncomfortably close to our current situation of underequipped servicemen,
and lack of resources for our returning veterans.  While Battlefield: Bad Company steals the iconic
irony from Full Metal Jacket’s poster (A helmet with a peace sign now becomes a
grenade with a happy face), it lacks any of its narrative power. Still, it is
amazingly fun to play, plot be damned.

B:BC plays like the spiritual successor to Black, the Xbox
and PS2 shooter made by Burnout developer Criterion. From the integration of destructible
environments, the tight camera view, to the inexplicable large amounts of explosive
red crates and barrels, the two titles look strikingly similar. Control in
Battlefield also recalls Black, from the lack of any autoaim assistance, to the
reliance of zooming with the left trigger.

Bad Company
’s distinction in the realm of first-person
shooters is the level of environmental destruction. Sadly, ballistic firearms
don’t chip away at buildings and terrain, only explosives cause any real
damage. Still, players will get an overwhelming sense of satisfaction in
blowing silos to bits, even when it’s not a mission requirement. The title
welcomes replay by giving the player multiple ways to break down the enemy. In
the first level, the player can take out communication equipment by planting C4
charges up close, or launching RPGs from a safe distance.

B:BC uses the proprietary Frostbite engine developed by
DICE to great effect. The framerate is smooth throughout even when a multitude
of huge explosions rock the screen. Different filters, from the gritty, dusty look
of an old film to the sterile black and white starkness of a satellite image are
employed throughout the game. Aurally, the game is a masterpiece, and should
give any quality sound system a  workout.

After enjoying the single player game, we found multiplayer to
be somewhat frustrating. Instead, of playing the game’s Gold Rush mode in an
objective based fashion, play felt more like deathmatch, with a large number of
spawn campers. Hopefully, a future patch and player experience will rectify
this situation.

Battlefield: Bad Company is the best console shooter since
Call of Duty 4; anyone craving a new FPS experience could do much worse. Sadly,
the title doesn’t dethrone Infinity Ward’s opus, as its multiplayer isn’t as
refined or detailed, and its plot doesn’t deliver on its premise.

  1. You guys sound like real ‘who-haws’. I played the demo and thought it was good, but not great.

  2. Did anyone figure out how to unlock all the weapons?

  3. Solid review; much better than I thought the title would turn out.

  4. Sounds great, blowing $hi& up. Might get this on payday.

  5. I hear multiplayer is broken- spawn and get killed over and over.

    Sounds like fun….not!

  6. I thought you were trying to save us money?!?

  7. I’ll get this when it drops to $40. It’s a EA release. My guess will be in September.

  8. First review that made the connection between the FMJ logo and this one. Good eye!

  9. Sounds like a fun game. I liked Black, but it was too short.

  10. It seems after all the fuss about the collectors edition everyone forgot all about the issue.

  11. I got my copy reserved. Picking it up at 12:00 PM today. Woohoo!

  12. Bottom pic has some nice shadows, textures.

  13. The warporn isn’t dirty enough for you guys? Hahaha

  14. I saw this article on Digg on have to chime in:

I completely agree that a game that want to honestly depict war should be rated “M”.

We’re sending the message that war is a teen-rated, sanitized, coming-of-youth experience.

Thats not further from the truth. I know EA wanted to make the largest audience possible, so they decided to keep the game light.

  15. Sam, I don’t think all wargames have to be realistic. I think all the reviewer was saying was they have this interesting concept of soldier being left by their country and they don’t do anything with it.

  16. At this point, a FPS has to do more than just give me pretty explosions for my money.

  17. I though the aiming in the demo was really difficult.

  18. I bought it today, and so far agree with the review.

Multiplayer is a joke. Please fix it, EA

  19. Forgot this Ticket to Ride is out today!

  20. Ive been craving a FPS lately, so I might have to bite the bullet on this one.

  21. How do you unlock all the guns?

  22. Are the enemies middle eastern yet again?

  23. Russian bad guys.

  24. This game keeps making my xbox 360 freeze.

  25. My fourth 360 is about to die- I feel your pain.

  26. Wasn’t Bad Company the name of a 70’s rock group?

  27. Yes, next up for EA is Battlefield: Blue Oyster Cult

  28. I can’t find any matches, anyone else with this problem?

  29. I was debating on the 360 or PS3 version. Now, I know I’m getting the PS3 version.

  30. Man, my save file got messed up on my 360.

  31. Sounds like an average title released at a good time.

  32. Great review! Thanks.

  33. Whats wrong with a funny, light hearted FPS? That all don’t have to be deadly serious.

  34. Most fun I’ve had since COD4…

  35. Bought it today, and really like it.

  36. I though this was rated “M”, not teen.

  37. I’m having a blast with this one. Much better that I expected. I hope they make a sequel.

  38. Battlefield is more Dr. Strangelove than Full Metal Jacket, and that OK with me.

  39. Some nice graphics, especially in the first and third screenshots.

  40. DiscipleInAgony

Multiplayer is not working for me.

  41. TurricansBodyguard

    Noice review.

  42. Right about now, I need a new FPS. This might fill that need.

  43. While I agree with the review of the game, I don’t agree with the politics- there’s nothing wrong with a wargame there’s nothing more than a lighthearted romp.

  44. Saw this on Variety’s blog, and I got to say, “It’s just a game!”

  45. How’s the enemy and squad AI?

  46. I played the demo, and I have to agree it feels so much like Black, it seems like its running on the same engine.

The whole injection power-up was annoying; I wish they uses Halo 3’s health system.

  47. Gamers should boycott this; EA promised five free weapons for going along with their marketing campaign. Gamers are reporting bad codes and wrong weapons. Some people can’t get all 5 weapons after jumping through hoops.

Plus multiplayer is all laggy right now. I rented the game and couldn’t get into a ranked match.

  48. Which is the better version 360 or ps3?

  49. Iconic irony? Jeez, keep the writing understandable puhlease!

  50. 360 version is slightly better with a bit less screen tearing. Both are good options, though

  51. Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to understand a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the e book in it or something. I think that you simply can do with some percent to power the message home a bit, but other than that, that is fantastic blog. A great read. I will definitely be back.
