New Releases for the Week of November 11th, 2012

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Whether players are stepping back to the 1970s to perfect their fly moves in The Hip Hop Dance Experience or fighting proxy wars during the ’80s with Call of Duty: Black Ops II‘s Alex Mason, many of this week’s new releases are rooted in the past. With Assassin’s Creed: Ezio Trilogy, PS3 owners will be able to relive  the trio of Auditore-driven titles, with the of bundling Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Revelations as well as the Bonfire of the Vanities and Battle of Forli DLC. Meanwhile, Paper Mario: Sticker Star reinvigorates Intelligent Systems turn-based battles for the fourth franchise iteration, this time to collect the six royal adhesives left behind by Bowser.

Robert’s Pick: If most franchises put out eight entries across the same number of years, the audience would be crying, “enough already!” The Call of Duty series is the outlier, thanks to contributions from no less than ten different development teams. Much of COD‘s continued success stems from a dogged instance on innovation, a trait absent from many of the franchise’s military-themed peers. With Black Ops II that trend continues. Featuring open-ended Strike Force missions that allow the title to have a branching storyline (which introduces perma-death to the game) the ability to livestream matches through “CODcasting”, Call of Duty looks to maintain its uncontested reign for at least another year.

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2

Sean’s Pick: While you’d think that the last of this year’s major releases would have taken a break to make way for this week’s obvious Game of the Year contender, Wonderbook: Book of Spells, we’ve been handed a fairly healthy list of releases that aren’t even book related! Although I’ve gone on the record as saying that Mario as a brand doesn’t do anything for me, I have to admit that I have been generally charmed by the Paper Mario series. The idea of sticker-collecting isn’t exactly lighting my world on fire, but if the core is solid and the translation is as well-natured as The Thousand Year Door, then I’m in.

Paper Mario Sticker Star

Eric’s Pick: The 3DS’ must-have holiday title is here and it’s a big one. Paper Mario: Sticker Star has the lovable plumber wandering through pop-up book worlds in search of the shattered pieces of the wish-granting Sticker Star. Better be ready to explore and collect because stickers are required to do attacks during battle and each one is single use only. With it being a Paper Mario title, the game should provide plenty of witty dialog to keep the adventure amusing from start to finish.

Paper Mario Sticker Star

Jeremy’s Pick: The “lite” RPGs of the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series have never steered me wrong. The play style is typically simple… wander around and interact with nutso characters, get into battles, augment your fighting abilities with collectibles (badges, stickers) and use expert timing to nail mini QTEs for combat bonuses. The thing that makes these games memorable, though, is the innocent humor of the story and surprising wit of the writing. Furthermore, the debut of the Paper series in stereoscopic 3D will finally realize the diorama aesthetic that had previously only been simulated in two dimensions. I’m glad Nintendo is sticking with the series, and I will too.

  1. Robert,

I’m sure BO2 is going to big and maybe even bigger than last year, if that’s possible. But how more larger can the game get? You think it will still be getting new people to play in 5 years?

I’m thinking there might be backlash soon.

    • Not this year. I mean bare minimum it’s going to do as well as last year. In other words, it’s going to make Activision a shit ton of money.

If they’re smart, they’ll continue to improve CoD. I think the movement toward e-sports is really a good move for them and could pay off big. Elite was cool too, once it got working.

  2. I have to pick up Paper Mario: Sticker Star to add to my collection.

  3. Wait, the Assassin’s Creed: Ezio Trilogy isn’t coming to 360 or did you make a mistake?

  4. Ive heard nothing but great things about Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Glad you’re on board, Des.

  5. I bought Paper Mario: Sticker Star from Newegg for $29.99. Hopefully, it will get here soon.

  6. I expect no COD:BO2 review, but 2000 words about Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage? from you guys.

  7. I’m here to show my support for all things plastic and Middle Earth.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings

    • I’m tempted to buy LEGO LOTOR because I love LOTR and kind of like the LEGO template. That siad, they always drop in price pretty quick. And with so many games, I can I can wait until the holidays have passed.

  8. Whats going on with your site? It’s SLOW….

    • Yeah, I noticed the same. It’s like there’s a new podcast, but I don’t see one.

      (Is there a secret one?)

    • Our servers are on the East coast, so they were effected by the storm. Things should be getting progressively faster as servers go back online.

      • Yeah, Kotaku servers (and the rest of the Gawker family) went down and they had to use Tumblr.

I guess you guys don’t have a backup plan?

  9. So are there any deals this week on BLOPS 2. I don’t really feel like paying full price.

  10. Are Wii U games really coming out before the system?

  11. If you’re a Nintendo fan, the Paper Mario games are must-plays.

  12. Wal-mart had Paper Mario out last night, so I had to bite. So far, so good. Pretty funny and combat is still fun even if you need stickers for EVERYTHING.

  13. One word of warning about anyone thinking of picking up Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified. It was made by the same developers that made Resistance: Burning Skies (Nihilistic Software) They have now left Vita development to make iPhone games.

    • Damn, that’s the Vita last hope. I wonder why Sony gave two games to Nihilistic instead of split up development duties.

BTW- I noticed a lack of Sony reviews lately. Any reason why?

  14. Lego Lord of the Rings is probably fun.

  15. I just picked up LEGO The Lord of the Rings and they put a demo disk in the box.

    SHIT!
