New Releases: Aug 27-Sept 2, 2026

This week’s new releases span everything from tactical espionage, grand strategy, super-powered soccer, and even a bit of good, old gothic carnage. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots bring two different chapters of Snake’s saga to modern platforms, while BRIGANDINE ABYSS offers continent-spanning conquest and CAPTAIN TSUBASA 2: WORLD FIGHTERS returns to the pitch for some spectacle-filled competition. Rob’s Pick: Here’s where I admit a bit of indifference toward two of this medium’s beloved franchises, Elden Ring and Metal Gear Solid. While I respect Miyazaki’s craftsmanship, I’m not sure punishing combat is the way I want to spend my free time. Plus, I’m more of an explorer than a perfectionist. The latter frustrates me because every time it finds a rhythm, the momentum seems broken by a lengthy lore dump. And dissecting decades of continuity just isn’t for me (I quit the MCU and Star Wars ages ago)

That means the accessibility of Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark gets the nod this week. M2’s collection serves up the kind of immediate gratification I’m looking for, bringing together Flying Shark, Fire Shark, and all their regional variations into a single package. Faithful arcade modes preserve the intended intensity, but things like a Super Easy setting, rewind functionality, and M2’s helpful on-screen gadgets all ensure you don’t have to be an STG savant to appreciate this anthology. Did I mention that Fire Shark was the first Genesis/Mega Drive shmup I ever beat? Take me back, Toaplan to simpler, parry-free times.

Ryan’s pick: It’s been about 18 years since I played Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but I honestly can’t pass this up. With the recent re-releases it’s pretty satisfying to play these classic MGS games on other consoles, so I’m seriously considering playing this one on the Switch 2. Now, this game doesn’t come without some personal qualms, as the overall game pacing was a departure from my favorite in the series MGS3, and almost felt like a movie with all of the pre-rendered cutscenes and sunny-side up egg frying. I didn’t know about the photoshoot mode during the one boss battle back when I had originally played it, so I think that is going to be in the cards this time.

I wanted to also give a quick mention to CAPTAIN TSUBASA 2: WORLD FIGHTERS which releases this week. I’m going to place the blame square on all the gacha games I’ve played, but I’m immediately drawn to games with brief vibrant cutscenes before attacks. It’s these cutscenes and the over-the-top animations that help make this game stand out a bit more to me compared to FIFA games. This said the gameplay is slightly different than other soccer games, so you may want to investigate the game mechanics before jumping in. It does look like there is a tutorial mode included as well, which more than likely will come in handy for me as I didn’t get a chance to play the first game.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Look, I love Elden Ring, but let’s face it: It’s a Switch 2 port rather than a new game. Therefore, as much as I’ve loved stepping back into its world (and having something so majestic and expansive in scope, in a portable format), it hasn’t excited me as much as Brigadine. I love Brigadine so much and never expected that we’d ever see a sequel. I’ve not touched the demo as I want to go in fresh, and can’t wait to see what its like.

Otherwise, I’m quite happy to recommend Star Wars: Zero Company. I didn’t expect to love it, given that it’s an EA project (and no I didn’t like the Star Wars Soulslikes), but I was pleasantly surprised by Zero Company. Sure it’s more XCOM with Star Wars characters than a proper Star Wars experience, but it plays beautifully, and it’s just generally nice to have an XCOM-like game back on the market.
