Rob’s pick: While Akihabara is still a fun place to shop, it’s not quite the haven for obscurity it once was, where diminutive storefronts sold things like PCBs, resistors, and capacitors. Instead of buying finished products outright, you went there to find replacement parts and build things. One of the better fictional works to document that era was of course, 2009’s STEINS;GATE. Sure, there’s some solid character development and an engaging exploration of PTSD. But what really made 5pb. and Nitroplus novel so good was how it captured the shift from hacker culture to anime. It also understood the verticality of the area, where some of curiosity’s finds might be lurking among the floors of a high-rise.

This week’s release of a STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is closer to a remake than a remaster. Character portraits, backgrounds, and CGs have been redrawn, the entire voice cast recorded their dialogue, and even Takeshi Abo redid his score. Naturally, the big draw is a new worldline (story branch) with its own set of divergent events and consequences. Whether you here for the time capsule nostalgia or plotlines, RE:BOOT is this week’s clear highlight. Tutturu!

Ryan’s pick: I have nothing but good things to say about the STEINS;GATE series. It’s definitely in the top three in terms of visual novels for me because it has a little bit of everything in terms of character personalities, suspense, and a few small rays of light fanservice here and there. There’s also some light sci-fi horror undertones, but it’s not as intense as say Higurashi When they Cry. STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is definitely worth your time as it is a top tier visual novel and this new reboot adds even more value to the series. If you’re a LCD tv aficionado, this is a must-get.

As a marginally adept rhythm game fan I wanted to drop a quick mention for HyperCore : Rhythm Bullet Hell. It’s a slightly different take on a rhythm-based game in that you need to dodge the bullets and projectiles that appear on the beat, so I think it may take a small bit of a learning curve for me to get used to the gameplay. The levels look very fast and vibrant so I can see myself really enjoying this one once I get the hang of it.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I have waited for a new Defender of the Crown for so long now. The original “4X”. Close to the original strategy game of all time. Now it seems simple or even basic, but it still plays so very well. And now there’s a developer actively trying to build on it with Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns. I dunno if I’ll care for this “roguelike” mode, but the enhanced original Defender will be more than enough for me. I am so very excited.

I’m also interested in seeing The Sinking City 2. Not only because that poor developer, Frogwares, is a story of resilience in just being around, given that it’s 1) a Ukranian developer and 2) screwed over time and time again by its publishers. But also because the original Sinking City did a good job of melding open world expiration and puzzle solving with Lovecraftian horror. If they’ve managed to building on the promise of the original, this could be a sleeper hit this year.
