Rob’s pick: For anyone interested in a beat-’em-ups with a bit of grindhouse feel, Mexican Ninja is one to watch. Its premise imagines a Mexico colonized by Japan. Cities are being terrorized by the Narkuzas, a criminal empire with both cartel ferocity and yakuza order. The result is a multilingual world that feels a lot closer to a lost exploitation movie than a conventional action game. And I’m a sucker for a good pulpy setting.
Underneath the setup is a fairly robust combat system. Fights involve a small but ever-expanding toolkit, with dashes, aerial attacks, uppercuts, and the wonderfully named chingadazo giving encounters plenty of grit. Because the action isn’t overwhelmingly fast, there’s room to read the battlefield, pick out ranged enemies, and make smart use of environmental hazards. This week, I’ll be paying La Virgencita a visit, it’s probably the closest thing to Viewtiful Joe we’ll see for a while.

Ryan’s pick: I recently picked up Elden Ring to take some footage for a friend and forgot how much I love soulslike games. It reminded me that it takes me all of about twenty seconds after spawning to cause absolute chaos in this genre, so I’m naturally drawn to Mortal Shell II for this reason. Visually the game has the same dark and visceral feel as a Dark Souls game but with some pretty impressive attack animations. I missed the first one but after learning a bit more about the ‘hardening’ mechanic caught my interest in that there were only about a thousand times where I could have used that while playing roguelikes. If you’re into soulslikes this one is one to watch.
I’ve never been to Nuevo Tokyo, but this week I’m considering it. I wanted to give a nod to Mexican Ninja because I found out that it’s roguelite beat’em’ up. At least for me this will help with replayability as once I finish a game in the genre I usually tend to not venture to play it again unless it’s for some co-op, or it’s Streets of Rage II. Aside from the cultural mashup, visually the game is unique and the fact that it’s 2.5D also helps it to stand apart from other games in the genre. Overall this could be a good one to give a look if you are a beat’em’up fan.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I really enjoyed the first Mortal Shell, as something that was obviously inspired by Dark Souls, but willing to go in its own tonal direction and offer a more intensely violent and horror theme compared to the elegance of Dark Souls’ gothic tone. Mortal Shell was also built cheaply, and given its success I’m very much looking forward to seeing what the team can achieve with a expanded budget against the sequel. Mortal Shell 2 it is for me this week.
I’ve also had dozens upon dozens of people recommend 1000xRESIST to me over the years. Apparently it’s my kind of thing? I’ll use the Switch 2 release of the game as an excuse to remedy this gap in my gaming canon.
