This week’s schedule of new releases feels like a tea party filled with revivals, role-playing adventures, and some arcade action. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 receives a Switch 2 enhancement, while BLUE REFLECTION Quartet give the tender magical-girl saga some reworked components. Rob’s pick: If you have even a slight appreciation for classic arcade shooters, Truxton Extreme deserves a spot on your your wishlist. Rather than chasing modern bullet-hell excess, Tatsujin revives Toaplan’s approach where memorization, precision, and relentless pacing collide into vertically scrolling chaos. This time out you have access to the EX attack system, adjustable ship speed, and an unexpectedly well done cooperative mode.

I has a lot of fun with Culdcept Begins recently. So much so, that my thirst for a Magic and Monopoly mix hasn’t been quenched. As such, I’ll probably give Culdcept The First a try, if mostly to appreciate the series roots. I know I mentioned this last week, but BLUE REFLECTION Quartet is arriving on console. If you don’t already own the two main games, this is requisite for magical girl fans.

Ryan’s pick: Truxton was my first shmup on Genesis and to this day is one of my absolute favorites in terms of difficulty, visuals, and music so Truxton Extreme gets the pick. I am pretty sure I’ve mentioned this game multiple times in the past when talking about bullet hell games, but the series stands out in my brain for being really tough but incredibly rewarding as you progress. Like Robert mentions, the original had a bit of memorization required in terms of bullet patterns and enemy spawn locations, but overall this one is a good choice for shmup fans.

Kusan: City of Wolves gets a quick mention this week as it’s been quite some time since I’ve played a top-down shooter. At first glance there are some clear parallels to Hotline Miami, but the vibrance of the art really was what caught my eye with this one. Timing was always tough for me in this genre, but it still feels great once you are able to clear a stage after botching it countless times.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Blue Reflection is basically made for me, so that’s my pick for this week. Magical Girls mixed with classic JRPG action, and then the gorgeous art of Mel Kishida? Yeah, I dearly wish these games were bigger than they are. Quartet brings together every in the series to date, modernised and updated for the console experience, and that means around 100 hours of just pure, wholesome, goodness.

Otherwise, I don’t know what we did to deserve so much Culdcept in one go, but a port of the original Culdcept just a few weeks after an all-new game is a hell of a treat. If you’ve never played Culcept before, imagine if Monopoly met Magic The Gathering… and then imagine that it somehow works. Because it really does.

Finally, as a quick aside, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 might be the thirstiest of the series to carry its name, but it’s thirsty on top of a truly excellent game, so make sure you give the Switch 2 enhanced port a spin if you haven’t played the game yet.
