New Game Releases: July 23-29, 2026

This week’s game releases deliver revived classics, ambitious spin-offs, and long-awaited returns. Halo: Campaign Evolved reimages Master Chief’s original adventure, while Disgaea Mayhem turns Nippon Ichi Software’s strategy RPG into an action game built around the franchise’s obsession for grinding. BLUE REFLECTION Quartet (pictured) bundles Gust’s magical-girl RPGs alongside a reworked adaptation of the anime, and Splatoon Raiders sends Nintendo’s colorful ink-slinging series into new territories. Rob’s pick: Despite having little interest in competitive shooters, I’ve had a lot of fun with the Splatoon series. I think part of the appeal is that the games are just as much about controlling territory as they are about splatting your rivals. I’ve also appreciated the series’ single-player expansions, which have helped flesh out the world beyond the multiplayer focus. This week, Splatoon Raiders shifts even further toward solo play, replacing competitive matches with raids, dungeons, and boss battles. Color me interested!

Disgaea Mayhem fuses the TRPG franchise’s signature level grinding with musou-style action. The result is interesting, moderately engaging, and sporadically frustrating, as off-screen enemies frequently interrupt your combos. There are moments when I’m eager to dive into the Item World to strengthen my equipment, but there are also stretches that feel repetitive. Even so, it’s an intriguing adaptation that aims to broaden the series’ appeal, though I suspect longtime Disgaea fans will get the most enjoyment out of Mayhem.

Finally, BLUE REFLECTION Quartet bundles the two mainline games, adapts the anime tie-in with new 3D visuals, and reworks the now-defunct BLUE REFLECTION SUN. As someone who loves the series, I felt that questionable decisions, like introducing a male protagonist and giving SUN an aggressively stingy gacha system, did the franchise no favors. Hopefully, this collection gives the series the fresh start it deserves. BLUE REFLECTION remains a beautiful property, offering one of gaming’s best interpretations of the magical girl genre. (Forgive me, Sakura Kinomoto!)

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): HINAKO IS BACK! HINAKO IS BACK! HINAKO IS BACK! Blue Reflection is a series that seems almost totally designed for me. Or at least the two main games are. Both aggressively wholesome, sweet, charming magical girl stories that blend empowerment and coming of age, with Mel Kishida’s incredible artist’s eye backing them up. I hadn’t played the spin (or seen the anime), so this collection is not just a chance for me to replay two of my favourite JRPGs of all time (and spend some more time with Hinako!), but also see the complete creative vision all in one go.

Speaking of favourite JRPGs of all time, Final Fantasy X and X-2 are timeless classics at this point, both of which have been released dozens of times at this point. But they’re also absolutely brilliant games, and a new release is an excuse to play them again, I guess. Not even sure what the Switch 2 release will bring to the table, but I don’t really care because it’s a chance to hang out with Rikku again.

Now if only I could figure out how to get Square Enix and Koei Tecmo to collaborate and make some kind of cross over title… Rikku and Hinako could totally be BFFs. Yes. That would be a good game.
