Rob’s pick: Muchi Muchi Pork! & PinkSweets Boosted brings a pair of quirky arcade shooters together, pairing a pig-themed bullet hell with PinkSweets’ color, chaos, and a Siren’s song of power-ups. Between the aesthetics that are thinly veiled fetishes, using bombs for scoring opportunities, and the sadistic difficulty, this is why Cave’s shooters are revered in STG circles. Fortunately, Boosted goes beyond just preserving the originals, adding new arrangements, multiple versions and modes, as well as online rankings, and replay support. I just wish Ibara was part of the package so we could truly immerse ourselves in Yagawa’s greatness.

Meanwhile, DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered combines the original PS2 game with Xtreme Legends, bringing together 40+ officers, some classic Three Kingdoms battlefields, and the timeless enjoyment of mowing down armies by the hundreds. Instead of just emulating the original games, Omega Force rebuilt the game on Unreal Engine 5. I haven’t had any hands-on time, but I’m really hoping the remaster balances visual fidelity with scalability. Zhao Yun needs a home on my Steam Deck.

Ryan’s pick:  It’s the Locust! The original Gears of War is still to this day one of my favorite Xbox games and both the sequel and third games were equally amazing. I was playing Sniper Elite: Resistance recently and noticed that the game uses a similar reloading mechanic to Gears of War where if you tap the reload button at the correct timing you reload faster and it absolutely got me all nostalgic for Gears. There’s just a lot to like about these games, and for me it was the third-person perspective and the screenblur when running that really helped me with immersion in the game. I wasn’t as much of a fan of the fourth and fifth games, so I’m really happy to see the original protagonists Dom and Marcus return in Gears of War: E-Day. Visually I think Unreal Engine 5 will do the game justice and I’m equally interested in seeing exactly how the refreshed modernized controls feel.

I’m going to also give a brief mention to STAR WARS: Galactic Racer. The part that got me interested in this one is you can take out other enemies and cause them to crash. In my experience racing games that involve a bit more variables typically will keep me interested much longer because of how unpredictable things can be. Seeing some of the gameplay made me think a bit of the Burnout series which is absolutely one of my favorites from the PS2 era. The aftertouch mechanic still to this day is amazingly satisfying.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): There’s a lot to talk about this week. Ace Combat 8 is a good place to start. Dogfighting sims are hard to get right, as the complexity of flying a fighter jet doesn’t necessarily lend itself well to either arcade action or accessible simulation play. Ace Combat has always been the exception to the rule, and this is quite possibly the finest effort we’ve seen in the entire series. From the cinematic storytelling, to the incredible soundtrack, and exceptional combat setpieces, Ace Combat 8 really is something special.

Then there is my beloved Dynasty Warriors series. I hadn’t actually had the chance to play Dynasty Warriors 3 in the past – I came to the series later than that and by the time I had, I didn’t have a PlayStation 2 to go back and play the earliest ones. Seeing this game in all its classic Dynasty Warriors glory has been a delightfully nostalgic experience.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention Viractal: Will You Trust Your Party?. I actually have this on PC and just never got around to playing it, so the Switch release will be a good excuse. I love a good blend of board game and JRPG – I still regularly play Dokapon, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this one can drag me in.

    1. it’s a another no-effort PS4 to PS5 release from S-E. Same as Octopath. No new content, it would take a microscope to see any visual improvements.

I really hate what they’ve become.
