Rob’s pick: Many, many Octobers ago, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was due for release on the original PlayStation. I called my local game store twice a day for at least a week, until I got the good news. I hurried down and played Hagihara and Igarashi’s now classic devotedly until the end of the year, transfixed by Alucard’s quest and the well-hidden secrets. Few metroidvanias have given that same thrill, especially the discovery of the inverted castle (which didn’t happen for me until weeks later).

Expectedly, I’m over the (blood) moon with the arrival of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. It looks to capture the same sense of exploration and discovery that made Symphony of the Night so magical, while adding enough new ideas to keep it from feeling like a retread. There’s something satisfying about getting lost in a giant gothic castle, where secrets lurk in each alcove. If Belmont’s Curse honors that sense of discovery, this could be a memorable October once more.

Ryan’s pick: I’ve been raving about Dead Cells for years and I think I own the game on three separate consoles. It was an excellent surprise to see the collaboration between Konami with the Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC, so when I heard that Evil Empire was developing a new Castlevania game it was an immediate preorder. I had a chance to see Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse at PAX west and the thing that immediately caught my eye was how crisp the animations and art were. If you’re a metroidvania fan then this one is a must.

Valor Mortis on Steam gets a quick mention this week as this first-person looks like it’s an absolute blast, especially with some of the swordplay. I recently finished playing Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow and loved some of the melee in that so I can easily see myself enjoying it in this one as well. There’s also firearms and magic in your arsenal, so it looks like it’s going to be a bit of trial and error to see what will be the most effective against enemies as at its core it’s a roguelike. The horror-themed plagued Europe environments look quite frightening so give this one a look if you are looking for a more visceral FPS.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): This is one very big week for games, and it’s really hard to narrow it down. I think my top pick of the week must be Ratatan. I love Patapon so very much, so the developers behind that breaking out to do their next thing has my attention immediately. I didn’t play it in Early Access on PC, as I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the “proper” release on console, but I am very encouraged by the positive response backing the game so far.

I’m also a big fan of Clive Barker (Imajica is one of my favourite novels of all time) so I’m inherently interested in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. It looks like it’s going to be a really intense horror game, too. With so many horror titles veering heavily towards being more explosive action games these days, I am hoping that this one instead doubles down on the atmosphere and sense of dread. Based on the screenshots I reckon it’ll get there.
