New Releases for the Week of March 6th-12th, 2013

Darkstalkers ResurrectionFrom an epic battles across the picturesque lands of Olympus, Troy, and Sparta in God of War: Ascension to dropping hostiles across Sarajevo, Burma, and Tibet in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, this week’s new releases provide a variety of locales for players to accomplish their annihilation. Naturally, the push to pre-order factors into both games; putting on a down payment toward Ascension allows players to control King Leonidas’ in the game’s multiplayer matches, while Ghost Warriors’ perk includes the VSS Vintorez, a Soviet sniper rifle with first-class sound suppression capabilities.

Robert’s Pick: While I can’t consider myself a dedicated fighting game fanatic, I’ve been a big fan of Capcom’s quirky monster mash since Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors’ (gimped) PSOne appearance. Elevated by silky animations and innovations such as air-blocking, Morrigan and Felicia fisticuffs has proved to be more than just Street Fighter with succubi and bakeneko. This week, Iron Galaxy Studios(Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online, Wreckateer) is hoping to provide a revitalized compilation of Darkstalkers lore, offering HD upscaling, GGPO netcode, and plenty of unlockables. Obviously, I’m eager for the Resurrection.

Darkstalkers Resurrection (1)

Eric’s Pick: This is a week where voting with your wallet is important. In spite of repeated pushes by Street Fighter bossman, Yoshinori Ono, Capcom has been gun-shy about modernizing Darkstalkers. The best way to get the message across to Capcom that the ghoulish fighting series deserves the Street Fighter IV treatment is by supporting Darkstalkers Resurrection. Thankfully, that won’t be much of a chore since Resurrection is shaping up to be another quality digital release with Morrigan and company.

Darkstalkers Resurrection (2)

Jeremy’s Pick: I’ve suffered “faux-franchise-overload” syndrome before. The sheer weight of four or five previous entries in a series absolutely guarantees that the next sequel will be no fun, right? Right?? As it happens, I continued to enjoy the new games because they were fun. So, I’ve learned my lesson, and I continue to look forward to God of War: Ascension. I suspect that it will satisfy the tearing-heads-off-mythological-creatures-and-spitting-down-their-throat-holes withdrawal I’ve had since 2010. And you know, I bet the multiplayer is a pretty good time too, just like many other games’ “tacked on multiplayer” we pre-emptively complain about. Why do we do that? Why not just have FUN? Honestly. It makes Kratos so MAD. Look to your throat-holes.
