New Releases for the Week of March 20th-26th, 2013

BioShock InfiniteAcross this week’s schedule of new releases, sequels abound. Whether players are ready to get behind the armored masks of Salem and Rios in Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel, grab the Poltergust 5000 to explore Luigi’s Mansion once more, or return to the greens in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 many of this week’s new releases revisit recognizable motifs.  Undoubtedly, the release of Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin is likely to  stoke the fires of familiarity, with the expansion pack poised to bring MMO enthusiasts back into the decade-old title.

Robert’s Pick: Following two delays, the departure of several key staff members, and a rather middling montage exhibited at last year’s E3, I started to worry about BioShock Infinite. But then news started to trickle out about Irrational Games ambitions- from having a smart, adaptive,  AI partner to how the setting of Columbia feels even more tangible as BioShock’s Rapture my faith was renewed. This week players will finally be  able to find out if Ken Levine and company are able to see if they can top of of the most prodigious efforts of this console generation.

Jeremy’s Pick: Although it’s not the biggest name in creative, emergent play, I think that Terraria actually makes for a better “game” than other such titles. The delving, exploration, and progressively tougher baddies make for a more directed experience for the goal-oriented among us, and the 2D creation and crafting mechanics want for nothing. After a few unintentionally protracted sessions with the game on PC, I was spooked enough to stay away or else risk crippling addiction.  I may be able to conscientiously avoid such trouble again when Terraria comes to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this month. But God help me if this thing ever comes to the Vita.

Sage’s Pick: Echo, Robert. Although I won’t be able to pull the plastic off my own copy for the next few weeks, I am very much looking forward to playing Bioshock Infinite.  My hopes have likewise ridden a roller-coaster as Infinite has waited to make an appearance, but like Robert, I’m hopeful that the latest Levine release will deliver.  And if it doesn’t, I’ll just console myself by jumping off of airships repeatedly until I get tired of falling to my death.

About Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. I’m really surprised that Army of Two is still going. The first was one of the dumbest games I ever played. Total braindead shooter.

  2. Anyone bothered by IGN’s exclusive (yet supposedly unfinished) review of BioShock Infinite?

I’m sure it will be 9.0+

Between this and Polygon’s SimCity switcharoo, the big sites can’t be trusted these days.

    • That’s some stinking ass bullshit. But it’s IGN, so is anyone surprised.

      • It’s sad that ‘journalism’ is headed that way. One day Geoff Keighley will be remembered as a pioneer instead of a sell-out. Thats awful.

        • Sooner or later everyone sells out. That or they die off. It’s how the game works.

But IGN’s readers don’t care about ethics. They just want a number so they care argue about something.

  3. I usually always pick up the new Tiger Woods this time of year. But last year I never got though all the content and courses. I might have to wait on it.

  4. I’m thinking about picking up Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. I loved the GameCube game way back when. Plus I hear it’s more of a puzzler than a action game. That’s a plus.

  5. One question, where is the bloody hell is SeanNOLA’s Monster Hunter Ultimate review?

    Step it up, Sean!

  6. Isn’t Class of Heroes 2 for PSP out this week?

  7. BioShock Infinite, PS3

  8. looking forward to BioShock of course but surprise surprise Army of Two’s demo on XBLA was hella fun!

  9. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Rogue+Pokemon=Gotta buy them all.

  10. I want to like BI, but I’m afraid with racism, and all the other things that Irrational put into the game that the play will suffer.

  11. Electric Relaxation

Tiger Woods 14 for me. Hopefully, you’ll review it before release.

  12. Sorry to disappoint you Robert, but I read Elizabeth isn’t that smart or interesting.

  13. Im really excited for BioShock Infinite. The delays are finally over.

  14. I just noticed that Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is getting universally ignored. I guess there will be no Army of 3 or 4.
