New Releases: September 27th-October 3rd, 2018

With appearances from notable personalities like Kenshiro, Ronaldo, and the Blue Bomber, this week’s schedule of new releases is a rather star-studded event. For those with little interesting in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, FIFA 19, or Mega Man 11, fear not, there are a number of other tempting titles due with Life is Strange 2, Jake Hunter Detective Story, and a multitude of others arriving across the next seven days.

Robert’s Pick: Join me in telling my wallet, “Omae wa mou shindeiru” (you are already dead). Like many others, Fist of the North Star (along with Lone Wolf and Cub) was my gateway into manga. Devoid of the sanitized violence of most Western graphic novels, Kenshiro’s post-apocalyptic realm was infatuated with obscene amounts of viscera, and I loved every minute of it.

This week’s release Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise isn’t artful in the traditional sense, it’s about punching people so hard their bodies explode into a geyser of crimson-colored mist. But SEGA’s RGG Studio, the developers behind the Yazuka series, are proficient at making combat feel visceral and offering an ample amount of side diversions. This week’s I’ll be yelling “AH-TATATATATA!” as I tear the shrink wrap off my physical copy.

Ryan’s Pick: My pick for the week goes to the Blue Bomber’s next installment, Megaman 11. I can honestly say that I have loved every single Mega Man game I’ve played, including those infinitely difficult Gameboy releases in the 90s – I’m looking at you Dr Wily’s Revenge.  I also recently replayed Megaman Legends and it brought back so much nostalgia that reminded me how much I enjoyed the series.

Megaman returns in his 11th installment in 2.5D, which I think is a good choice for the series. Traditionalist “hey I grew up in the ‘80s man!” gamers may scoff at seeing the game in 2.5D, but change is inevitable here on spaceship Earth and is a good thing. The visuals look fresh, and it gives the series a well-deserved new look. The Double Gear system has been added as well, which should add a bit more depth to the ways you can tackle bosses. It kind of reminds me of Luffy’s Gear 2nd, in name only, but maybe it’s just because I’m a One Piece fanatic. With extra modes and leaderboards, I really can’t find anything that I’m not excited about for this game.

Zack’s Pick (Senior Editor, RPG Site): Being a big fan of the original Life Is Strange series (especially its soundtrack), I have to give my recommendation to this week’s release of the first episode for Life Is Strange 2. Over the course of five episodes, I developed a strong bond with the plight of Max and Chloe, but I fully understood given the ending to that first season there was no way they would consider bringing them back for another go (outside of the prequel, Before the Storm).

As a result, Life Is Strange 2 introduces us to two new characters in Sean and Daniel who hold a much closer relation than Max and Chloe considering they’re related by blood as brothers. After experiencing a tragedy that has them on the run for law enforcement, I fully expect the same level of high stakes drama and supernatural twists to take us for the ride in the coming episodes. I don’t really need to say that adventure game fans should take note of this one.

About Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. I could see TowerFall being fun on the go, but $20 seems a bit much. I paid $10 for the console version. Even with the Switch tax, I’d say $15 would be my limit.

  2. Life Is Strange was a great idea but I just couldn’t connect with the characters. They seemed whiny to me. I’m hoping the second game will fix that because I like the concept.

    • A lot of games get nailed for not showing diversity. I don’t feel like LiS tried beyond a few token students that you never get to know. It seems like SJW attack other games but this got a free pass.

  3. Is Arena of Valor really free to play? You need an online pass to play it right? And those cost money.

  4. It’s FIFA week for me. That’s the only sports series I care about.

  5. Fist of the North Star looks fun but I can wait for a sale right now. Especially since Amazon and BB got rid of their promotions.

  6. I’m ok with the look of Mega Man 11. It’s how I feel a MM game should look in 2018. Still 2D with with a bit of graphical boost.

  7. Excitebike is one of my favorites. If you can share and download courses online I’ll get it.

  8. Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story is also coming to the PS4 on 10/2!
