New Releases: September 13th-19th, 2013

Grand Theft Auto V (1)

Those suffering from triskaidekaphobia will be happy to know that this Friday the Thirteenth isn’t poised to summon either Jason Voorhees or deluge of wretched titles. In fact, with titles such as Grand Theft Auto V, The Wonderful 101, and the commercial release of MechWarrior Online, gamers should be feeling quite lucky. With The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, FIFA 14 and Takedown: Red Sabre arriving next week, fortune just might be smiling on us through the remainder of the month as well.

Robert’s Pick: As much as I’d like to champion Platinum’s The Wonderful 101 for its unapologetically sharp learning curve and underdog appeal, this week I’m forced to side with the juggernaut title, Grand Theft Auto V. As a cinemaphile, I’ve always enjoyed Rockstar’s loose adaptation of film, whether it’s Vice City’s recreation of Carlito’s Way coke-snorting Kleinfeld or IV’s homage to The French Connection’s legendary train chase sequence (not to mention a mission title that parodies Peter Greenaway in the third entry). While GTA V is likely to filled with filmic allusions, I’m especially eager for heists which recreate the tension and chaotic gun battles of 1995’s Heat.

Grand Theft Auto V (2)

Say’s Pick: This week, it’s all about top hats, a monocle and a stylish cane. Enriching the side-scrolling brawler, Baron Dashforth and his faithful apprentice Scampwick, fight through masses of angry mobs. As Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world’s a stage”. With the release of Foul Play onto Xbox Live and Steam and PC, the world is a collection of stages, each filled with a bevy of beasts that the intrepid demon hunter Dashforth must dispatch.

  1. Sometimes I feel like I am the only gamers in the world with no interest in GTA. I know there’s others like me, I just haven’t met them yet. Maybe they don’t post online.

    • I’m with you. I’ve tried to play the GTA games but they’re just not for me. They look fun and are beautiful though.

  2. I see what you did there, weaving Friday the 13th, a Jason mask, and GTA together, you sly dog, you.

I still need to play the The Wonderful 101. Is it as difficult as people are making it out to be? I heard some call it the un-Pikmin.

  3. Metro: Last Light – Developer Pack .

Last light has been one of my favorite games on this year.

  4. I’m pretty excited for GTA V. Thinking about taking Tuesday off.

  5. World’s Best Driver? So you obey speed limits, traffic signs and all that. Sounds pretty awful. 😉

  6. Only a little disappointed that Foul Play isn’t this:

  7. I’ll probably jump into MechWarrior Online now that the beta is done.

  8. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is my favorite Zelda game. If I had a Wii U I’d grab it for sure.

  9. I’m curious, could Say pick Cognition: Episode 4 – The Cain Killer or is that not allowed?

    • Maybe Foul Play is better. That’s not too far fetched.

    • @Crimson Fury – I must say it’s been quite wonderful being able to work with TG and never being under any restriction like that, Robert is extremely supportive of indies and I know it wouldn’t have bothered him had I picked Cognition.

Fact is, I don’t know how many of you are familiar with game development, but once you work with something so closely for so long it’s kind of impossible to become objective about it – my social media team and I are outsourced for Phoenix, but we’re still very much connected to what it’s all about.

@kross – I’ve got no idea which would be better, either Foul Play or Cognition, I do think they’re very different though. The only thing they’ve got in common is that they’re both indie teams.

  10. So did you considering picking The Cain Killer at all?

I mean if I worked with a company, I couldn’t help but feel some obligation to support those I work closely with.

    • I think most people already associate me with Phoenix as it is, so I believe there is no need for me to merge it into everything I think, feel or say and I must say. The vast difference between Marketing and PR is the fact that I deal with data and I transform information into ROI – their PR is the one in charge of mass tier promotional push. I network and engage with communities as I work through data analysis, but I’d like to believe I can be my own person after all.

  11. MEOW!

(I don’t like cats, only the girls who dress and act like kitties)

  12. Got to add this:

  13. Can wait for GTA3 PC version to come out. Anyone knows when it will be released?
