Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis ($TBA)

Rob’s pick: These days, rhythm games only entice me if they have an eclectic soundtrack. And while I had to do some key remapping to play Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis with a controller, between protagonist Qtie’s parasocial love for a fictional character and the denpa-kei tracklist, I’m enjoying the quirky title. Between playing table-top games with the Touhou gals in Marisa of Liartop Mountain and playing poker again some ruthless witches in All in Abyss: Judge the Fake, developer Alliance Arts has been bringing plenty of offbeat titles lately. Keep them coming!

Ariana and the Elder Codex is probably one of my my favorite recent metroidvanias. This week, the title makes the jump to PC, which I hope improves on the image quality of the Switch version. Even if it doesn’t, being an OP spellcasting librarian should be on your to-do list. I like to imagine Ariana dishing out AOE punishment as a form of late return fees.

Ryan’s pick: Without knowing much at all about YunYun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis I originally thought it was part of the Konosuba universe but I was pleasantly surprised that it’s actually a rhythm game and a standalone IP. Sensory-wise this game may push my limits with both the visuals and high bpm denpa songs, but after over a month of replaying all the Resident Evil remakes it’s the levity I need.

Lately I’ve been trying to play more multiplayer games with friends online, so I wanted to give a quick mention to Far Far West. It’s a western themed co-op FPS game where you and your robo buddies seek out enemies and bosses for loot. I also kind of like how the whole crew gets to whip through terrains while riding their own horse, which in my experience always can bring tension or hilarious moments with friends that aren’t great at racing games.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I love the Shin Megami Tensei series, and that love started with Nocturne/Lucifer’s Call, back on the PS2. There is something very specific about the aesthetic of that series that is core to my love of it, and for that reason I’m very much looking forward to trying KAZUMA KANEKO’S TSUKUYOMI. I’m not sure making the artist the single selling point of the game is the wisest move, since the artist tells us nothing about the actual gameplay, but in screenshots I see cards and SMT-adjacent monsters, so chances are I’m going to enjoy this on at least some level.

I’m also super keen for the new Moomintroll game. I love Moomin – last time I was in Japan I went to a massive art gallery exhibition dedicated entirely to Moomin – and the last Moomin game, from the same developer, was a comfy delight. I expect no less from this one.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

One Comment

  1. Still waiting on a good reason to get a Switch 2. Too many paid upgrades and not enough exclusives.
