New Game Releases: July 18th-24th, 2014

Oddworld New n Tasty

Traditionally, the summer months are a scarce time for console releases, and this year is no exception, with only a handful of titles designed for dedicated hardware. Fortunately, things aren’t quite as dismal in the PC camp, where indie developers have been hard at work to keep the gaming calendar full of interesting titles. There’s Unrest, a role-playing game which transports gamers to an ancient Indian setting where the thread of turmoil is swelling at a treacherous rate. Undead Overlord is a Real-time strategy game that inverts the typical perspective, playing players in control of zombie horde that’s hell-bent of global domination. Of course, for those that prefer to control massive amounts of military hardware, Machines at War 3 lives up to its moniker, providing over 130 different types of death-dealing, tax-payer financed, killing devices.

Robert’s Pick: In retrospect, Nintendo’s inaugural digital download service was a tragic disappointment, delivering only a handful of titles that were actually worth their weight in Nintendo Points. Beyond the original version of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, there was also Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop, a capable entry in the action/puzzle series. This week, Namco-Bandai reaches into the archives to appease Susumu Hori’s loyal supporters, with the Virtual Console release of Mr. Driller 2.

Originally an arcade title, the game was given a proficient port to the Game Boy Advance, which serves as the basis for this week’s sole Wii U release. While the game’s a bit older, it’s a definite improvement over the more recent Mr. Driller Online, which soiled the franchise with debilitating net-lag and blurry artwork. Do yourself a favor and stick with this superior and far more satisfying version of the game.

  1. “Strike Force Foxx ” sounds like that joke from Pulp Fiction.

“Fox as we’re a bunch of foxy chicks. Force as we’re a force to be reckoned with. Five as there’s one … two … three … four … five of us.”

  2. PC overload. Brain cannot handle it all. What’s happened to this site?

    (static discharge like Pikachu)

  3. I never thought the Oddworld games were fun except for the FPS one. The ones where you talk, jump, and fart are pretty boring.

  4. Abe looks saddened by the lack of good games this week.

  5. Comic Workshop would be a great Club Nintendo perk. Not worth $8 though.

  6. I’m hoping My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant is hilarious. It has the potential to be.

    • I really hope it succeeds. It would be nice to see homosexual characters that aren’t just played for laughs in a game.

  7. I wish there was a NEW Mr. Driller game instead of a rehash.

  8. I heard OlliOlli was cool (but heard) on the Vita. I might have to check this out on PC.

  9. Pretty crappy week for games.

  10. Unrest sounds like a cool idea but I’m going to wait for the reviews.

  11. I like Mr. Driller and wouldn’t mind playing the game on my new Wii U. Even if it is the old GBA version.

But charging $7 for it is pure crazy. Only Nintendo could attempt something like that.
