Tech-Gaming Cracks the Whip on Lego Indiana Jones

Numerous developers have tried to capture the essence of the Indiana Jones films to varying degrees of success. From the primitive action of the Atari 2600 title, Raiders of the Lost Ark, to the graphic-adventure interpretation of Fate of Atlantis, to the Tomb Raider-like adventuring of Infernal Machine, Dr. Jones has seen it all. Now, developer Traveller’s Tales has adapted their tried-and-true gameplay of their successful Lego Star Wars franchise for Indy’s universe.

Much like the Star Wars titles, Lego Indiana Jones core gameplay revolves around smashing environmental objects and exploration. While the Star Wars games were more combat-oriented, Indy’s adventures are centered on simplistic puzzles. Nearly all of these situations are nested- for example, you must dig up one artifact before you can complete a section of railroad track, before you can use the railcar as a platform. The title is almost never frustrating, as players know a solution to each dilemma is present on every playfield. Unlike Lego Star Wars, levels do not try to accurately duplicate every asset of the film, instead shrewdly using key scenes for inspiration.

Graphically, the game juxtaposes Lego blocks on an organic playfield, which gives the game a unique look. We tested both the 360 and PS3 versions of the title, and found significant screen-tearing in both titles. Although there is an option to remove the screen tearing, this drops the title to 30 fps, and the game loses much of its fluidity. Aurally, the game relies of grunts and moans to convey emotion from its main characters, which is probably a better choice than choosing to imitate Harrison Ford and the other actors. Unsurprisingly, John Williams score complements the on-screen action perfectly.

The title is perfectly tuned for off-line cooperative play. The Lego games are one of the few titles that adults can play with children, and not feel their cerebral matter atrophying. Unfortunately, Traveller’s Tales took a step backwards- there is no option for online co-op play, which was featured in the last Star Wars release. Other than this strange omission, Lego Indiana Jones is a very solid package that will stand up to multiple play sessions.

  1. Nice Review. I love the Star Wars Games and plan on picking this one up ASAP.

  2. Great looking review. Any good sales on this game?

  3. Do you think they’ll bring out a new edition with the Crystal Skulls and online play?

Should I hold out or buy now?

  4. Great review. I have this game and absolutly love it. I think its even better than Lego Star Wars.

  5. Rented it and ended up buying it.

  6. Man you guys use too many big words.

    Seriously, great review.

  7. I’m afriad the game will be too similar to Lego Star Wars. Some friends who bough the same thought so.

  8. Congratultions on another great review. I have fouind this site reviews to be getting better and better. I hate reading through IGNs five page reviews where they talk about something peripheral to the game, just so they can get more page hit (and ads).

Keep it simple and ad-free and I’ll have a perm. bookmark.

  9. I thought the game didn’t make good enough use of Indy’s whip. And the humor wasn’t very humorous.

  10. As long as the game has the John Williams soundtrack, I’m there!

  11. I never understood why the Lego games were so popular, there’s pretty simplistic.

Too kiddy for me, I guess.

  12. I completely agree with your comment on the graphics. It’s like Lego toys in your backyeard!

  13. How’s the difficulty level. I’m thinking about picking this up for my kids.

  14. Sounds like a great game I can enjoy with the Mrs.

  15. They should make a Lego game based on the old school movie monsters- Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman.

    That would be fun!

  16. I just picked this up today. At first I was skeptical of the reviews. I thought the Star Wars game was allright. Nothing great. But I’m loving this one.

  17. What’s that a sketelon in the bottom pic?

  18. The only problem I have with this game is they totally made the Nazis seem cute and non threatening. They are pretty much evil in the first film, so I don’t get it.

  19. Manowar,

What did you want swastikas made out of Legos? I don’t think they would have approved of that.

  20. No I wasnt expected that. But call a Nazi a Nazi, don’t call them ‘enemy soldiers’ in the descriptions. Everyone knows they’re nazis.

Making them cute is actually performing a diservice. The kids will grow up thinking, “The Nazis weren’t that bad, there were all cute in this game I played as a kid”

  21. They did make the nazis kind of cute in this game.

  22. Can’t wait for Lego Batman!

  23. Will the batman game be based on the comics, the old movies or the new movies?

  24. Whip isn’t powerful enough. It seems kinda weak.

  25. I just bought this game today. I think its a bit overrated.

  26. I was going to buy this, but I spent $20 on the damn Penny Arcade game. That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve done in a long time.

  27. Screen tearing isn’t that bad. At least the framerate is 60 fps most of the time.

  28. You guys come up with some amusing titles.

  29. I’m not really getting into the game. It feels like the same gameplay screen after screen with just different backgrounds. Ill try to give it more time.

  30. I like boy games

  31. I can’t beleive how popular this is- I couldn’t find a copy anywhere.

  32. Got this today. It’s hella fun. I’m sorry I waited to get it.
