Rob’s pick: Tragically, I avoided playing Culdcept because several reviews described it as needlessly complicated. After finally sitting down with it, I couldn’t help but wonder what all the fuss was about. If you’ve ever played Monopoly and have even a passing familiarity with Magic: The Gathering, you’ll understand the fundamentals quickly. The real joy comes from discovering clever card combinations, adapting your strategy to each map, and deciding when to invest in territory or sabotage your opponents. It’s far more approachable than the game’s early reputation suggested. Best of all, there’s still plenty of depth once you start digging into its systems.
This week’s release of Culdcept BEGINS is the perfect time to give the series a shot, if you have never played any previous iterations. Alternatively, the original game is finally making its way west later this month as Culdcept The First, which means July has somehow become the unofficial Culdcept Month. While I’ll be playing both, the former’s storyline and tutorial make Culdcept Begins is an easy recommendation for anyone who like board game tension with some card-based battles.

Ryan’s pick: Hack and slash games are the sweet spot for me in terms of being able to partially space out while playing and think about other things while still being able to make progress. The medieval themed Tears of Metal gets the nod this week for its unique art style and mixing hack and slash mechanics with roguelite elements. Part of me thinks that the stakes will be a bit higher than say a Samurai Warriors game, but this unique combination with some fantasy violence and blood looks like it’s a perfect match for my tastes.
It’s been a very long time, but I used to thoroughly enjoy flight simulators when I was younger on my PC. The dystopian flight-sim G-Rebels coming this week on Steam gets a brief mention for some impressive bright visuals and fluid combat. There currently is a demo on Steam for the game, so if you are a flight combat aficionado this may be one to try. I wanted to also give a quick shout out to Arknights: Endfield. There’s a brand new patch hitting this week and I wasn’t sure I was going to like this game until I got a chance to try out the crafting/factory simulation systems in it. If you are into f2p action RPG gachas this is one to try out.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Culdcept is one of my favourite niche series’ of all. Blending Monopoly and Magic the Gathering together feels like something that shouldn’t work… but it does work. So, so well. This new Culdcept has a gorgeous art style and plenty of tactical depth to go with the multitude of different boards to play on. I won’t say much about the narrative but… even then, as the weakest part of the game, it still promotes character and charm and it’s worth playing through just to see some of the offbeat character designs pop up. One of my favourite games this year.
Elsewhere, eBaseball! Now I don’t want to offend anyone here, but the Japanese baseball league is, objectively, so much more fun than the American one. It’s just harder to fully enjoy thanks to some extreme licensing on the match broadcasts, and Konami refusing to localise the only official games for the competition. That is finally changing. We’re finally going to be able to play the better baseball games (and they are better than MLB: The Show) in English. Finally.
If only there was a Switch 2 port as well. But still, baby steps.
