Rob’s pick: Game discussions used to be about topics like “where should development start: with gameplay or the plot?”. Now, concurrent Steam counts dominate the discourse alongside a flood of clickbait. This week, Putrika 2nd.cut:For the Exquisite Attire provides the kind of meaty ethical dilemma that’s worth engaging. Here, a young, smiling girl asks a gem-cutting apprentice to kill her. As a visual novel, I’d expect the kind of perspective skewing that the medium habitually offers.

I have no idea if Killer Bean will be able to pull off the spectacle shown in the trailer. But the idea of jumping through a skyscraper window, activate slow-mo, and gunning down a rival bean as you’re following as me intrigued. Has there ever been an instance of intentional slow motion making a game worse? I can’t think of any. Lastly, I just got some hands-on time with Voidling Bound. While there’s a few minor issues lack lackluster boss battles, the blend of platforming action and evolutionary upgrading reminds me of Ratchet & Clank and Skylanders. You know, when developers understood fun.

Ryan’s pick: NBA Jam was one of the peak arcade experiences that I’ll never forget, and a few years later when it finally came out on SNES I didn’t put that game down for months. NBA THE RUN gets the official pick this week for capturing the original spirit of NBA Jam and adding a new flair to it. The 3v3 dynamic changes some of the strategy and hopefully will alleviate some of the ganging up on a single player where they kind of get shoved to oblivion until they lose possession of the ball. Famous street courts, rollback netcode, and a large roster of popular players make this one an easy pick up.

It’s been less than a month and I’m already missing my survival horror fix from all the RE Remake platinums, so I wanted to give a brief mention to the FPS Comatose. Graphically it looks like an early 2000’s FPS, so it immediately goes to the top of my list. In general it seems pretty grisly and psychological, so I have hopes it will be as scary as the Amnesia series.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded):  As a big-time fan of Eurojank RPGs, I have enjoyed the Gothic series a whole lot over the years. I am very keen to see what a remake of the first involves. Are they going to dare make it… good? But that’s not what Eurojank is about! It’s meant to be wildly ambitious while also being broken as all hell. Either way, it’s going to be fun to find out.

I’m also very interested in this remake of 7th Guest. Never played it (I know, I know), so it will be good to knock off the list of notorious classics that I’ve yet to touch.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.
