New Releases 5/3-5/9: Second Time Around Edition

This week’s new releases include a DS game based on a 1994 computer game, a compilation of popular FPS games, and a ‘wiimake’ of a GameCube game with a grafted control scheme. Yep, this week is ruled by sequels and remakes, which outnumber original games. At least a title where the flora battle the undead offers a dose of freshness.

Plants vs. Zombies

DesertEagle’s Pick: Seeing how the videogame world went collectively gaga over the PS2 version of Klonoa, I almost feel required to give it the nod. While it’s an enjoyable little 2.5D platformer, it lacks diversity for me. At least this version will have the option for Classic Controller and GameCube pad support alongside motion control. Jagged Alliance DS‘s graphics may lack sophistication, but it’s turn based strategy kept me at my keyboard fifteen years ago; hopefully the nonlinear gameplay still holds up.

SeanNOLA’s Pick:

I am always excited to get my hands on the next Klonoa game,
and the Wii could definitely use the affection, but my pick of the week belongs
to Plants vs. Zombies.  PopCap’s viral “Zombie on your Lawn
video was catchy enough to stick with me for the past month or so and I think
that warrants a look.

TideGear’s Pick: It’s hard to pick this week! PopCap’s game’s are usually much too shallow and easy for my taste, but I’m hoping Plants vs. Zombies will change that trend. It does look pretty darn promising and I, too, loved the music video. I’ve been looking forward to Klonoa, which is actually a remake of the first game for PlayStation One, but I preferred the much more puzzle-oriented gameplay of the handheld Klonoa games. All of that said, this week Jagged Alliance DS is my pick. I’ve only played a bit of the past games, but I enjoyed them quite a bit, and intend to make up for lost time.

  34. Klonoa is easily the headliner, as the PS1 original is still one of the best platformers ever made.
