New Releases 4/5-4/11: Cinematic Showdown Edition

The convergence of Hollywood and high-tech has officially reached terminal velocity with Hannah Montana, Riddick, and Fredo Corleone seeping into our consoles this week. Let’s hope this movement is predominantly unidirectional, otherwise we might see the return of Micheal Dudikoff in Ninja Blade at the multiplex next Summer.

DesertEagle’s Pick: While I love the concept of Rhythm Heaven, I don’t know if I have the patience required for it’s high level of difficulty. For cadence sadists, it’s might be worth a look. I’m going to have to give Hammerin’ Hero a whirl- it’s anime-inspired destruction seems idyllic for an early morning commute.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: I too am intrigued by Rhythm Heaven, but my pick of the week has to go to Hammerin’ Hero.  Side scrolling action games seem to be what the PSP does the best, and the art style of Hammerin’ Hero takes me back to the early nineties, when fistful of quarters and a quirky Japanese beat-em-up were all I needed to have a nice day.

TideGear’s Pick: I’m about to shock and amaze! While I’m predictably looking forward to Rhythm Heaven, I actually find The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena to be a game I’m surprisingly interested in. Despite it being a movie-based game and an anti-hero game, I had a lot of fun with the original. Not only that, but there’s a fighting game out this week that I’m actually excited for, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus! When it comes to fighting games, I say go bizarre and extreme or go home. “Heaven or hell?!”

  1. Ninja Blade is doomed to the bargain bins. Did ANYONE like the demo?

  2. Walker, Texas Rapist

  3. Just a random helicopter pic or what?

  4. You guys make baby Dizzy cry with no Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus pick.

    Heaven or Hell, bitches!

  5. I’m guess its from DCS: Black Shark, and Deagle gets hot for warporn.

  6. Rhythm Heaven, cause I ain’t no wimp 😉

  7. The Godfather 2

  8. Hannah Montana is it gets a “M” rating for sexual themes and nudity from the ESRB.

  9. Vote for Hammerin’ Hero!

  10. yes and YES!

  11. Rhythm Heaven, just picked up my DSi today and need a new game to show it off.

  12. Which will be better the PSP or PS2 version?

  13. I played the original Riddick game on the original Xbox. I really don’t think paying full price for a remake is worth it.

  14. The Chronicles of Riddick

  15. Someone’s atr our front door, wait…Its Chris hanson with a few questions.

  16. Ninja Blade looks like fun, but not for $60. Maybe at $40.

  17. More like $20…

  18. I thought Hanna Montana was coming out for the DS.

  19. Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

  20. Riddick is going to be amazing, can’t wait! And what’s this no Hanna Montana for the DS?!?! I thought that girl got every system at the same time, consider yourself lucky I guess lol.

  21. Rhythm heaven is the only title of interest for me…the others (riddick and godfather) I’ll pick up in the bargain bins.

  22. DCS: Black Shark for me.

  23. I rather play as Tony Montana than Hannah

  24. Godfather 2, I really liked the first one.

  25. Hey was TideGear fired, who is this SeanNOLA guy?!?!

  26. What is Professor Heinz Wolff’s Gravity? Anybody?

  27. Don’t worry, TideGear is still here; he just hasn’t posted his picks yet. I’m sure he appreciates your concern!

  28. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk4woSzFXIU

It actually looks pretty enjoyable, sort of like “The Incredible Machine”

  29. Uh, DE and Seanola said the exact same thing.

  30. Sandbox mode has me wanting this game.

  31. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, maybe. If the reviews are good.

  32. Im waiting for the Ninja Blade, thanks for the information

  33. Adam Milecki (TideGear)

    I actually do. It’s nice how someone always seems to notice. No worries! As always, I’m just slow! >_<;

  34. Adam Milecki (TideGear)

Look again! I even wrote my pick before I saw your comment!

  35. I am looking forward to the new company of heroes game. I really enjoyed the first one, which is surprising since I prefer FPS games. I wish they would have incorporated new armies into the game though.

  36. TideGear’s gone nuts. I love it.

  37. I always like your reviews, TideGear! Great to see your picks.

  38. it’s a sad day in the video game world when we see that they are actually going to release a Hannah Montana: The Movie video game. i mean are they serious. i doubt that game makes any money. i hope no respectable parent buys that for their child, who wants Hannah Montana as their child’s idol. somebody should make a game for 360 that’s like smash bros. all the classic xbox characters battle it out. that would be sweet.

  39. I agree with everything except that the game WILL make money. Parent and kids are stupid, and will buy shovelware with a talentless DISNEYKID on the cover.

  40. Did you guys know that ArsTechnica is copying you with a ‘pick of the week’ now?

  41. Adam Milecki (TideGear)

    Thanks!

  42. Adam Milecki (TideGear)

…and I’m passing the savings on to you!!! (No, it wasn’t supposed to make sense.)

  43. Professor Heinz Wolff’s Gravity, after watching the video.

  44. I’m looking forward to The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena for the 360 once the price drops. Hopefully it’s as least as good as Escape from Butcher Bay.

  45. Not much big stuff coming out this month, only a few things catching my eye, such as The Godfather 2.

  46. It’s kind of funny how Chronicles of Riddick and Godfather are coming out on the same day. Both are sequels to movie-based games that weren’t plagued with short deadlines and ended up pretty decent as a result. I can’t think of any other recent franchises off the top of my head that have done that, other than Scarface.

  47. I really enjoyed the Ninja Blade demo, its like a way over the top Ninja Gaiden. Maybe just a rental though.

  48. I really hope Riddick does well. The original was awesome!

  49. Well you can never go wrong with a Guilty Gear so I’m sure that will be a decent buy at the very least. Rhythm Heaven I heard was OK, not sure I think I’d like to try it out before I buy. But the list for this month isn’t very promising.

  50. I downloaded the Ninja Blade demo and played it for about 5 minutes, I didn’t really like it guess I’m not into the hack n’ slash type games and hitting different buttons as they appear on the screen would get old quick. My $.02

  51. I loved the first Godfather but after hearing reviews for it, it might be a bargain bin game.

  52. Two cents is about how much I’d pay for the game. I did not like it at all.

  53. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

  54. I need to get the Rhythm Heaven demo. I really want to play it!

  55. I just picked up godfather 2 for the 360. I played the intro mission really quick and so far so good. The storyline is pretty cool but it is a bit early to tell. We’ll see how it goes.

  56. I still need to pick up Riddick. Loved the original and can’t wait to play it again along with the new campaign and multiplayer modes, particularly Pitch Black.
