Rob’s pick: Oddly, Goblin Vyke: The Thief Tycoon doesn’t seem to be getting much attention. And that’s a shame since the game delivers a winning mix of genres. By night, you’re sneaking around dungeons, evading traps, and pickpocketing enemies. I love how foes are enfeebled if you steal their weapons. By day, you’re selling your stolen goods, managing employees, and even franchising your fencing operation, all to pay off your Goblin-dad’s debts. It’s got a playful script and the allure of looting is powerful. I haven’t had this much fun stealing since Thief.
If you appreciate ROM hacks like Pokémon Unbound or Pokémon Lazarus, Monster Crown: Sin Eater might be worth a look. It’s got a decidedly darker script as well as conveniences like a lack of random battles and a slightly more sophisticated battle system. Meanwhile, widescreen support means that Sin Eater looks good on portable PCs or Switch. If Nintendo’s direction is too linear and conventional, it might be time to swap monsters.

Ryan’s pick:Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series games are an absolute must for me, so Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City gets my seal of approval this week. I have a monthly ritual with a friend to play VR games together, and I can definitely see us playing this one. The FPS perspective is a nice spin, as ever since the arcades and NES I’ve been used to playing as the turtles in 2D. One other interesting note is the comedian Phil LaMarr voices Baxter Stockman, which is pretty awesome.
I wanted to mention two other games this week, with the first being a unique arcade action game called Twin Shot Deluxe. I had a chance to play the original Twin Shot as a HTML5 game and the controls are great. There are some definite homages to Bubble Bobble in the game, and I definitely caught myself humming its BGM after a few rounds. The final secondary pick goes to Dead as Disco. It’s a vibrant and flashy 3D beat’em up where you attack to the soundtrack’s beat. I think I heard a cover of The Final Countdown as one of the licensed tracks in the game, so it’s one to look out for that alone.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I love Heroes of Might & Magic. There isn’t a week that goes by where I don’t play one of them on one platform or another. I also have the entire board game collection, when that Kickstarter went ballistic. Like any HoM&M fan I’ve been suffering for a while, and it has been stuff like Songs of Silence that have sustained me. But I do have high hopes for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. It looks like the developers really are committed to delivering what the older fans loved about the series in its heyday.
Speaking of things I love. As a big fan of stalker horror I liked the previous two Coma games. I didn’t even realise there was a third in development, and now I can’t wait to check out what the game has to offer. The previous two offered some delightfully creepy narratives and taut 2D action.
