New Releases 10/9 – 10/15: World of Mirrors Edition

Overheard this week at the local Gamestop:

Customer: So, are you having a midnight launch for Lich King?
Cashier: No, the mall won’t let us do that.
Customer: But, you had a midnight launch for Gears of War 2
Cashier: But Gears players are different, the mall doesn’t want people coming dressed as monsters or anything.

Let’s prove those surly game store employees wrong. This week when you pick up your copy of World at War, why not get some wear of those M42 battle fatigues? And just to be safe, make sure the bright orange tip of your replica M1 Garand is visible at all times. Those mall security drones are a high-strung bunch.

DesertEagle’s Pick: At E3, we found ourselves cursing at Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts‘s physics model, where a missed jump sent us tumbling down a mountain for about twenty frustrating seconds. However, we can’t let physics stand in the way of building our own line of heli-cars, especially at a $40 budget price. Mirror’s Edge looks compelling, but rumors of it’s six hour playtime have us concerned.

TideGear’s Pick: Mirror’s-FREAKING-Edge (I wonder if that was its working title?) is my pick of the week! I hadn’t heard of the supposed “six hour playtime” DE mentioned but if that’s true there’s still lots of potential fun to be had via time trials and possible DLC. Just be aware that a while back it was said that Mirror’s Edge will receive some PS3-only DLC. (Take that with a grain of salt!) After that, I’d say Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Populous DS are of much interest to me.

  1. Tecmo Bowl is back, bitches!

  2. Banjo over Call of Duty? You don’t deserve the name, DesertEagle!

J/k! I’ll be getting that and WoW: Lich King.

  3. The Cake is a Lie

Wrath of the Lich King FTW!

  4. Mirror Edge. I loved the demo.

  5. Guinness World Records: The Video Game

See how many hours you can press the A button continuously? Sounds fun 🙁

  6. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Fooling around making different cars and things sound great.

  7. I’ll get an eye tattoo when I pick up mirrors edge.

  8. Banjo Kazooie for me. Preorder is payed off,

  9. Call of Duty: World at War

No ones getting it? What’s going on?

Gamestop story saw amusing, BTW. WOW players are a different sort of beast.

  10. Populous DS, I used to love that game!

  11. How do you guys find those picture that mash-up two games? I looked everywhere for one.

  12. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 for me. I want to help THQ stay alive so they can help me with my yearly wrestling fix.

Oh, and TNA iNPACT was pretty good. I just wish they had the WWE license.

  13. I think they photoshopped ’em. The shadows on the guy aren’t present on the Mirror’s Edge girl.

  14. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

Haha, they should give out little temporary tattoos like that!… In fact, now I want to make some!

  15. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

Yeah, I’m fairly certain DE makes those.

  16. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

Haha, at least hopefully no idiots will call him a Sony fanboy this week… Then again they always find a way!

  17. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

Yeah, it seems they failed to notice that most world records aren’t fun and are even unpleasant to set.

  18. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

To anyone subscribed to this entry, I just posted my picks!… if you care.

  19. Laughing at your cosplay suggestion.

Saving Private Ryan is on TBS right now, DE.

  20. Nice picks. I also haven’t heard about ME’s six hour play time.

  21. According to 1up:

-Hand to hand combat could get incredibly frustrating

    -running/jumping was amazing

    -4-6 hours long

-levels are large, but game is so short due to the speed you run through them

    -story sucks

-meat of the game for most people to be the time trial

-the fact that you can’t disarm people after stunning them with slide/jump kick was odd

-some sections of game are annoying

  22. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

According to Paul from OXM as seen here: http://www.oxmonline.com/article/reviews/xbox360/m-r/mirrors-edge
“‘How long’ is always hard to answer. It’s not a long game — it’s on the short side of average, I’d say. Maybe six hours if you hustle, eight if you linger. I’ll be playing the time trials forever, though…”

  23. Yikes, even with times trials, those four to six hours better be the greatest in my life.

  24. Looks like EA is still trying to push Facebreaker. I expect to see it on clearance soon.

  25. He does a pretty good job on those. This week was especially good.

    Call of Dootie for me.

  26. I cancel by BK:N&B preorder after playing the demo. I thought it was shite, guys.

  27. Can someone tell me how the secret service games are. More strategic or action style.

    Thanks!

  28. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

  29. Mirror’s “4 hour” Edge

  30. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts esp. for $40!

  31. Im surprised more people aren’t getting World at War. From the demo its seemed like a reskinned COD4- maybe that’s why.

  32. Anyone for a crappy game based on en even crappier movie?

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance

  33. It’s a pretty bad Photoshop job.

All I do is take two pictures, mask one, fiddle with the color a bit, add the text, and voila! I try to spend less than ten minutes or so.

In this one, the girl from Mirror’s Edge was overexposed while the Soviet was darkened. So it still looks a bit funky to me.

  34. HAHA, I was just watching that. It’s a damn shame that TBS edits some aspects of the movie out for television. I think ABC showed it uncut one Memorial Day. Kudos to them.

  35. My Stop Smoking Weed Coach with Bob Marley.

    Just kidding. Mirror’s Edge.

  36. Ill pass on this weeks offerings. I didn’t like using the left bumper in the ME demo.

  37. Some of these DS games don’t sound like games at all

    Guinness Book of World Records
    National Geographic Panda
My Stop Smoking Coach with Allen Carr

    WTF?

  38. Ratio of junk to good games is getting higher.

  39. How bad is Rock Revolution? And is it compatible with my Guitar Hero stuff?

  40. This is another support test.

  41. i can’t wait to play the new tales game coming out on wii

  42. didn’t know mirrors edge was coming out so soon! definitely gotta check that game out >.>

  43. Just CoD5 CE for me this week ALTHOUGH Tecmo Bowl sounds fun… I need to check out the CAG thread and see how people are liking it.

    Stop smoking video game, lol.

  44. too many good games coming out….

  45. Mirror’s Edge is AMAZING. I couldn’t stop playing the demo, THE DEMO! I mean, it’s training and one level, but the control just feels so nice. The enviroment, the feel, everything about this game shouts 10 of 10.

  46. Mirror’s Edge is looking pretty interesting. I might have to pick it up in the spring/summer when the release schedule dies down a bit.

  47. Can’t wait to get mirros edge, banjo,
    Left 4 dead,COD WAW.OMG especially COD:WAW

  48. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

I bought the game yesterday and I’m only a couple chapters or so in, but so far I’m pretty blown away. The game is really visceral and does a great job of making you feel hunted (and they aren’t just idle threats either). I haven’t run into too much fighting yet. (I usually just run for it, as one should.) What I did face was formidable but worked pretty well. As for the storyline, it hasn’t been amazing but so far it’s interesting and has fit the gameplay and environment well.

    …I’ll keep y’all updated.

  49. TideGear (Adam Milecki)

Oh, and I’m loving the level design. Paths aren’t obvious but the “runner’s vision” combined with the aesthetic design does a great job of making path-finding feel pretty intuitive.

  50. Thanks for the info, TideGear. I’m officially sold now.

  51. I picked up Mirror’s Edge and I’m loving it so far. I know that it’s a short game, but I’ll play it and the time trials several times.

  52. mirrors edge, call of duty and pes in one week. what a great week.
