Madden Fatigue? Join the League! We Review Blitz: The League II

In 1993, as the John Madden Football series was establishing a foothold on 16-bit consoles, developer Electronic Arts took a creative and unexpected move with a franchise spin-off.  Mutant League Football used the same engine as Madden, but replaced the title’s athletes with aliens, skeletons, trolls, and robots. The game was wonderfully hyper-violent- characters could step on landmines, be blown apart, and permanently removed from the game. Transplanting the game of football to a nihilistic sci-fi/horror world was a small stroke of genius for the emergent developer.

Despite critical and commercial success, the game was abandoned as EA focused their efforts on annual updates to Madden. However, gamers looking for a spiritual successor to Mutant League Football might take solace in Midway’s Blitz: The League II, a gruesome, arcade-style game for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. While Blitz lacks the extraterrestrials and undead players, its sense of humor and grand guignol -esque cinemas may delight those looking for quick pick-up and play action.

This week’s halftime show includes a CPR demonstation

Free of the directives imposed by the NFL on football games, Midway has created a delightfully grimy football title where injury-producing hits, steroid juicing, and a constant flow of profanities are the norm. Typical football rules are nixed as well, as Blitz features thirty-yard first downs and seven man teams. Control is reminiscent of nearly every football game from the last quarter century: players hike the ball with the “A” (or “X” in the PS3’s case) button, while other face buttons jump, juke, and dive. While on defense, players can change players with a button press, or initiate a tackle after the snap. A press on the left trigger launches ‘Clash mode’, where time is slowed and a set of particularly vicious maneuvers becomes available to the player.

Stripped of its ostentatious additions, Blitz’s core game of football is slightly substandard. Playbooks are intentionally simplified, but lack an option to flip a play. The computer’s AI is highly suspect, as landslide victories invoke an increased percentage of fumbles for the player.  Wise players will complete the in-game tutorials, and gradually implement the game’s signature features into gameplay. Once these mechanics are integrated, the game becomes significantly substantial.

The rain in Blitz looks beautiful, linebacker bellies- not so much.

Blitz is graphically competant, with a solid framerate and detailed player models. Two elements we enjoyed greatly were the Gears of War inspired clash-mode runs, and the internal damage cams. If players receive an especially brutal hit, the screen shows an x-ray of the tendons ripping or the bones breaking. It’s a visceral effect that really forges the personality of the game. Sadly, a few glitches exist, as we witnessed prone players sliding around the field, and a few glitchy tackle animations.

One of our favorite elements of Blitz was the mini-games triggered after an athlete injury. One instance had us injecting a player suffering from a broken rib. We guided the swaying needle with the left stick, while aiming for a bull’s-eye. After missing wildly, the wounded player sprang from the bench, yelling uncontrollably, the needle still stuck awkwardly in his side. While these animations lost a bit of their charm after repeated viewings, they were still morbidly funny and captivated onlookers.

“You know, you weren’t lying when you said you give a damn good neck massage.”

In the end, Blitz: The League 2’s charms overcome any of its deficiencies. Gamers craving a vulgar, bloodthirsty, pigskin game should spend a few hours with the title to bask in its unsanitized allure. As an antithesis to the increasingly stagnant Madden formula, the game stands as a capable arcade-inspired diversion.

  27. Sounds like it might be fun.

  28. Are those in-game shots? Because in the bottom pic, the guy has his fingers inside the other players helmet. That’s pretty intricate. Could be a sign of a render.

  29. Great review. Score seems consistant with what everyone is saying about the game.

  30. Please someone make a new Mutunt League Football. Blitz is cool and all, and Ill probably pick it up, but I would run full speed to the store to buy an updated MLF.

Imagine seeing the aliens, zombie, and quarterbacks exploding in HD glory. Someone needs to get on this.

  31. I’m surprised more reviews haven’t made the Mutant League connection.

You guys are just old-school fools, I guess.

  32. Never heard of this game. I was three in 1993.

  33. Just came today via gamefly. I played three games so far. Here’s some impressions:

    – Aztec field looks really washed out
    – four button presses for touchdown celebration are like MK fatalies
    – AI cheats like a MFer
    – Review is right, minigames are great and funny to

  34. Please check your email, we’d like to post this review on our site.

  35. Saw your review on N4G. Is Bloodmask one of your writers?

  36. Looks fun for a while. I don’t know about long term, tho..

  37. I can get the Ballroom Blitz song out of my head after reading that review for some reason.

  38. Too many other strong games coming out to get this one at full price.

  39. I liked the old blitz games- dreamcast era. They always had those awesome sound effects. You could hear the crunch in every hit.

  40. Personally, the NHL Hitz games were my favorites.

Wasn’t there a Mutant league Hockey, also?

  41. Late hits are a must have for any football game. I remember when they were in Madden for the genesis.

  42. Are those grade placards new? Looks cool.

  43. Kind of a bad time for this game to come out.

  44. Blitz 2 needs a demo. Is there one on live?

  45. I’m feeling old all of a sudden.

  46. No demo. I don’t think their putting one up.

  47. One review said player can get beat with their own helmets. True?

  48. Grabbed the game this weekend. I’m loving it so far.

  49. You can flip plays before you select them using the right trigger. You can also flip the plays at the line of scrimmage by pressing “X” for audibles, then “RB” to flip the play.

Don’t know if this is something they added in an update after your review. I didn’t figure this out for a long time until I did it by accident.
