Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City Review

When it comes to downloadable content, I’m notoriously frugal. While I’ve been known to go on game purchasing binges, I rarely purchase supplementary content for an existing game. My aversion emanates from the lack of novelty DLC traditionally offers. It’s not uncommon for auxiliary content to recycle graphical assets from the main game, or do little to change the game’s fundamental play mechanic. Innovative developer Rockstar has recently created two brilliant exceptions to these rules, with the Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, two episodic adventures that deftly extend the mythos of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Players without broadband access, or simply unwilling to forgo a good-sized chuck of their hard drive’s space have had to abstain from these two extensions of Rockstar’s deftly rendered universe. Now, with the release of GTA: Episodes from Liberty City, all Xbox 360 owners can delight in the rare piece of content that reveals the power and capacity of downloadable packages.  Best of all, they don’t even need to own GTA IV to enjoy the disk- Episodes is a standalone product.

When The Lost and the Damned was first announced, many expected the title to be a meager prologue that might prolong Niko Bellic’s plotline. Instead, gamers received over fifty musical tracks, twenty new vehicles, six additional weapons, and a fresh protagonist- Johnny Klebitz.  There’s so much content that Lost almost feels like an entirely name game; I’ve played sequels which offered far less substance and development.

Whereas the plotline of GTA IV focused on Bellic’s often-forlorn migration to Liberty City and subsequent pursuit of the American dream, Klebitz’s story dwells on maintaining stability during a period of duress. As an interim leader of a motorcycle gang while the president is in rehab, Johnny left a legacy of progressive guidance. His deliberately avoided conflict with rival gangs, and kept his guys out of jail. Once the former boss leader is discharged, the gang reverts back to their disorderly days, and conflict inevitably ensues.

While Niko committed a fair of heinous acts, his relative innocent contributed to his likability; it was hard not to feel for the character. The Lost and the Damned’s Klebitz is much more complicated, and at times, downright loathsome. For some players, his actions are going to prohibit identification with the character, and may cause frustration as players are forced to execute a few repugnant tasks. Still, these missteps are almost forgiven by Lost’s revision of GTA IV’s motorcycle handling model.  Riding bikes during Niko’s storyline was often unnecessarily dangerous, as slight collisions would launch players from their crotch rockets.  Now, the motorcycles are wonderfully invigorating, and offer some of the best two wheeled fun this side of Road Rash.

Luckily, The Ballad of Gay Tony’s lead character, Luis Lopez, revisits the realm of amiable leads. Like Klebitz, Lopez isn’t clawing his way to the upper echelons of society- in fact he’s almost there. This alone gives the second installment a salubrious vibe; it’s refreshing that Gay Tony abandons the working-class vibe customary to the GTA series.

Within minutes of booting the title up, the episode reveals its power- by offering smaller, supplemental material instead of a new, full game, the installment feels amazingly fresh. As eponymous character Tony Prince is discussing his crippling financial woes he states,” Forget the banks we’re the ones who need a bailout”, as gamers get a taste of the title’s humor and relevance. The title also offers players some of the most gratifying missions of the series. Between flying a combat helicopter and driving a LAV around town, Gay Tony offers plenty of opportunities to deliver a bit of ‘shock and awe’.

With at least twenty hours of enjoyment to be had in Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City’s single player game, plus an ample amount of multiplayer modes, the disk comes highly recommended. As both The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony represent the pinnacle of downloadable content, it’s nice to see the episodes made available for gamers without broadband.

  1. I hate a love and hate relationship with Tony. Some missions are really fun, while others are awful.

  2. I expected to not like Gay Tony as a character and a game. Turns out there both some of the best moments in GTA4

  3. Anyone know or want to guess where R*’s going to go next?

  4. I was going to d/l Gay Tony, but getting the whole disk will save me having to clear my HD.

  5. Can you install the game on your HD?

  6. Did they improve the graphics at all. GTA IV looks good from long distance, but up close looks blocky.

  7. Most reviews are caling it a APC, not a LAV… C’mon Deagle.

  8. Good review!

  9. It actually looks a lot like a four wheeled version of the M1126 Stryker ICV, rather than a APC, which are track-based these days.

    Good call, of Desert’s part…

  10. I’m hoping the game doesn’t choke on all the explosions and smoke effects!

  11. I bought L&D, and honestly didn’t like it that much. I’ve heard great things about Ballad, though.

  12. How much is it? Do you save from buying it online?

  13. Wow, two Rockstar game reviewed in a week? Time to get out of the sandbox 😉

  14. I rthink i’ll just buy Gay Tony. That sounded so wrong!

  15. Good review. Sucks for PS3 owners, like myself.

  16. There’s no need, it’s a standalone disk.

  17. Gogamer has it for $32.90, so yeah you can save a few bucks.

  18. Glad to hear they just didn’t add a few cars and a handful of missions (cough, Saints Row 2, cough)

  19. Never got Lost and Damned, as I din’t have any points at the time. Might be an easy way to grab both.

  20. What is Rockstar working on next? Have they dropped any hints?

  21. If they go all Yakuza, that would be awesome.

  22. I’m sure some place like Target will clear out the disk, or have a b1g1 free sale. Thats when I will make my move.

  23. Stealthy Squirrel

Well Microsoft spent 150 million keeping it system exclusive. I wonder if it worked out for them.

  24. So they’ll never add airplanes to GTA4?

  25. Sorry, but these DLC episodes are kind of week; they don’t let you use the new weapons, or APC in GTA IV. I thought that’s the idea of DLC to keep the old content interesting, too.

  26. lots of gta fans here. Never got all crazy about the games.

  27. I have to agree, 95% of DLC is a ripoff. these two are the only stuff I’d buy.

  28. This is on my Xmas list; so many games to play right now.

  29. I think I’ll get the disk, and try to save a few bucks. Plus I like having a real box, disk, and instructions.

  30. I forgot about Gay Tony. Since I d/led L&D, I’ll probably d/l this one as well.

  31. Nah, Sega’s got that covered.

  32. So there’s more more content for GTA IV? WHY?

  33. I loved Gay Tony. I didn’t want the game to end. Great game for $20.

  34. I got a friend who looks just like Luis. Too bad Halloween just passed.

  35. Everyone including Rockstar are calling them APCs.

  36. I really like Lost and Damned, much better than the original GT4 game.

  37. Actually, I think it’s time for a new engine. I don’t think there’s too much more they can do with the existing tech.

  38. If I was the disk on store shelves, I’d bite. I went to Wal-mart last night and didn’t buy anything!

  39. As long as the missions aren’t all the same, I may pick it up. GTA4 got really tiring after a while for me.

  40. I’m so glad these are finally on disk. Some parts of the US still don’t have affordable hi-speed internet.

  41. What kind of bikes are in Lost and Damned-American or Japanese?

  42. HAHA, my boss resembles Tony. Maybe they should make a movie together!

  43. I love the Grand Theft Auto games. No series of games gives as much satisfaction, or as much frustration.

  44. I’m not so crazy about these type of games.

  45. I really hope this will come to PS3 one day.

  46. Is GTA the best sandbox game out there? I remember when everyone saw talking about Saints Row. What happened there?

  47. Good review, though for me the gameplay started getting a little more repetitive by the third time around (Ballad of Gay Tony).

The reason people started talking about Saints Row is that they were “rebelling” against the increased seriousness that GTA IV took. The talk has probably died down because there is no news on the SR2 front (and the DLC is near-universally considered to be of poor quality).

  48. Rockstar should’ve just made GTAIV this.

  49. I only downloaded the biker gang one, it was really fun, i want to buy the newest one now, parachutes!!

  50. Hmm, I’ve always wanted to play the GTA IV episodes.

  51. To think I thought GTAIV was done, and then this just made me get right back into the story. Definitely worth the buy if you want to know what happens to the diamonds.

  52. I used to love GTA, but I havn’t really played the newer ones.

  53. Definitely was going to pick this up, but after reading the review it makes me want to pick it up even more. Thanks guys.
