First Place Finish- Forza Motorsport 3 Review

A top-tier racing game has much in common with an exotic sports car- both are blazing fast, elegantly sleek, and each offers its user a adrenaline-fueled experience.   A majority of racing titles have at least one debilitating deficiency- some lack an exhilarating sense of speed, while others suffer from brain-dead AI. The recently released Forza Motorsport 3 is the rare racing title with few flaws; it’s an amazing simulation that will appeal to virtual drivers of all skill levels.

The single-player component of Forza Motorsport 3 is modeled after the day-to-day career of a professional driver. As the on-screen calendar counts the passing days, players may participate in a variety of events, from short weekday races, to extended multi-part competitions on the weekends. Forza 3 wisely avoids a strict racing regimen; as long as players have a suitable car and enough racing experience, they may enter an event.

Success in competitions rewards the players with credits, driver experience, and car experience. Players can use the games liberal distribution of credit to purchase new cars, or upgrade existing vehicles. While gearheads will revel in Forza 3’s exhaustive modding depth, those be bewildered by torque ratios and downforce quotients may select the auto-tune option. The game’s clever car experience mechanic motivates players to stick with a particular model.  Although the temptation to collect the game’s 400 cars is strong, it is tempered by the generous distribution of manufacturer discounts.

Beyond the game’s exhaustive single player campaign, the title also boosts a robust online multiplayer mode. Up to seven other gamers can participate in highly customizable competitions, from straight-ahead races, to score-based drift events. Events with players in the same continent proved to be consistently lag-free; only when the competition went global was slowdown evident.

Much of Forza 3’s enjoyment emanates from the title’s extraordinary physics model. Whether players select an introductory level of difficulty coupled with a host of driving assists, or a rigorous, unflinching simulation, a startling amount of information is conveyed to the player. From the grip of the tires, to the weight of the vehicle, Forza 3 astoundingly conveys the relationship of car to track. Players are able to navigate serpentine sections and snug corners with remarkable precision.  Much like Codemaster’s GRiD, players that lose control during a race, may rewind time with a button press. It’s a handy feature that eliminates much of the frustration incurred when an AI driver induces a spin-out on the final lap.

Turn 10 clearly listened to the critics, who chided Forza 2’s bland visual palette. From the austere simplicity of the game’s menu system, to the title’s nearly photorealistic cars and gorgeous environments, the third iteration of the series shows a significant graphical improvement. The title’s smooth sixty frame per second framerate typically allows for a blissful sensation of speed, although very infrequently the game will inexplicably pause midrace for a microsecond. One of the components that added to Forza 2’s extended popularity was the game’s powerful livery system, which gave players an unprecedented amount of vehicular customization options. Now, players can create, apply, purchase and sell custom-made set-ups and decals. Each artistic creation can be applied to any car, improving the title’s already impressive flexibility.

The title’s faults are wonderfully diminutive. Being accustomed to racing games where opponents drive like mindless drones, it is grateful to see the sporadic rival fail to slow down and lose control in a sharp corner. However, seeing the driver make an identical mistake on the next lap is an ugly reminder that the error wasn’t spontaneous, but illusionary. Forza’s load times may irk impatient gamers; typically will have to wait about thirty seconds from event explanation to tarmac. The game’s auction house already contains a myriad of must-have cars, which players can submit offers on. Unfortunately, gamers cannot set bid prices, only increase an offer on an existing price. This means players will likely spend the last minutes of an auction manually submitting a rapid succession of bids.

Fans of racing games will find a nearly incomprehensible amount of depth in Forza Motorsport 3. Between collecting the game’s 400+ vehicles, competing in the multitude of events on the title’s 100 tracks, tuning, and painting, Forza 3 could easily deliver a hundred hours of entertainment. With an incredible amount of polish and a shrewd range of difficult levels, the title easily outstrips all its competitors and emerges as the reigning champion by an ample margin.

  1. They were sold out during last week’s B2G1 free sale at BB. I still need to pick it up.

  2. I tried it for about 20 minutes and got hooked. I don’t even like racing games that much.

  3. If I have F2, is this really necessary?

  4. Took a bit for the review, didn’t cha?

Oh well, it’s ok cause it was a good read.

  5. How is the $79 version? What’s different?

  6. Best racer ever. That’s right. I went there. GT5 will never overcome this.

  7. This game makes me wonder. How much better can games get graphically?

  8. I got Forza 2 with my Xbox (along with MUA), and have played it more than any other game. If this is an improvement, that’s amazing.

  9. Great review!

  10. Got this on release day, and haven’t had a chance to play it. Borderlands has taken over my 360 drive.

  11. Looks cool, but I gotta wait for GT5.

  12. I heard some of the screenshots are doctored. Does the real game REALLY look that good?

  13. If you can tell it’s a game and not a windshield, it can get better.

  14. Wow, nice reflections on that black car.

  15. Thanks for the review. Not into racers, but I’ll give it a rent to see what the fuss is about.

  16. Too bad there’s no motorcycles. That would have made the game for me.

  17. Your complaint about bidding seems too small I’m surprised you even mentioned it. I guess you have to talk about something.

  18. Sounds great. Finally, a game that’s worth $60.

  19. Yes they do.

  20. Do you guys know what kind of dlc will be offered? More cars I assuming, but more modes would be great

  21. People are crazy if they think GT5 is going to be better. Prologue was a joke.

  22. I just don’t understand wehen you crash a car at 80 mph, why the whole car isn’t destroyed. Instead you get a bit of damage. Even on the harder difficultly levels.

  23. I’m gonna avoid this until Winter break. I could see getting caught up in it.

  24. Are all the races in real life locations, or do they make places up?

  25. Great review. Need to get this.

  26. It’s on two disks right? Do you have to switch them often?

  27. 400 vehicles sound good to me.

  28. And jets. and tricycles.

    Some people are too picky.

  29. Why so long for the review? this came out a week ago.

  30. Too many good racing games are coming out. Many I should have waited on Shift.

  31. Good review. Does the care have more fancy cars or little boxy cars you see everyday on the street?

  32. Whose got the better dash view NFS Shift or Forza 3?

  33. Minister of Murder

Wow, sound like Forza 4 is going to be a hard game to make. They included everything players could want, huh?

  34. Its great getting to work, and finding a review in my in-box! Too bad it wsn’t Dragon Age Origins. Hint-hint!

  35. The Incredible Hunk

That first pic has got to be fake. It looks too damn good.

  36. Here’s hoping for a black Friday sale on this!

  37. How are the tracks? Are they all great or is there filler? Ovals?

  38. Got it this week and it’s fantastic. Have to agree best racer since burnout paradise.

  39. Actually, it drives me nuts. I can only get a car through the buyout option.

  40. Great looking graphics. I’m not too hot on racers, but this looks fantastic.

  41. They’re real. they’re a really good mix of tracks. The only real world I know is Laguna, and it seems authentic.

  42. I wouldn’t have expected that good of a score, more like a B, B+

  43. Good review. Video would be nice, too 😉

  44. Gonna get it from Amazon. Man, I’m going broke!

  45. Good review; I really liked the last Forza. Car customization was awesome.

  46. I tried the dmo, and sorta like it. Enough to pick up the game when it drops in price.

  47. Looks very cool.

  48. I got tired of racing games about 5 years ago. Dead genre, with only

  49. Really it’s a mix of real world and fantasy tracks. Plus some approximations of NASCAR tracks for those so interested and some stockcars to run on them! Hoping more real world are in the offing as DLC! But would be happy with either. A great game and would suggest those with an extra $20 pickup the LCE as free DLC has already been announced for LCE owners with more on the way! Peace and good racing!

  50. Don’t have to switch them at all! 2nd disc is more cars and tracks and is installed to the HD. So you need about 1.9 gig left on your HD to install. Kinda like a years worth of DLC. 2nd disc is in both versions of the game.

  51. Hard to compare the two for me. I love Burnout’s arcadeyness but I love a good sim, too.

  52. I gotta remind myself to try this out. I’m not much of a racing guy but looks great.

  53. This game looks absolutely amazing!

  54. A great game.

  55. I’ve been playing Burnout Paradise lately, but looks like I’ll finally have to put it down for a bit and try this out.

  56. I’m not a fan of the “real” car racing games… but I picked this up anyway because of all the hype… and as the review said… it’s pretty much a great game.
