Embrace the Case- OtterBox Defender Reviewed

I’m slightly obsessive-compulsive about my technology and electronic items. I fervidly refuse to purchase any of the ‘gutted’ titles from Gamestop- display copies that are typically marred with price stickers, instead opting for a pristine, factory sealed title. When I purchased my iPhone, I asked the AT&T sales reps which case offered the most meticulous protection, in an effort to keep my new purchase in pristine condition. The rep suggested a clear plastic shell that encased the hardware, apart from a few small apertures for the headphone plug, USB port, camera lens.

After a week of carrying the phone in my pocket, small scratches accrued across the front of the shell, tarnishing the clarity of the face.  While the case prevented blemishes on the iPhone’s actual touch screen, dust would creep into through the shell’s openings and accumulate inside, forcing a biweekly cleansing. After a month of removing and reapplying the case, I noticed the housing had left a deep scratch on the back of my iPhone; the snugness of the container, coupled with a jutting plastic connector had permanently scarred my hardware.

Fortunately, the people at Otterbox have come to the rescue. Save for some very small qualms, their Defender case for the 3D iPhone is a near-perfect solution for the person who craves thorough protection for their adored device. Altogether, the kit offers three elements of protection for the phone: first, a plastic shell protects the unit from scuffs and dings. On top of that, a silicone sleeve increases the amount of shock-protection if the unit is ever dropped. Lastly, a clear membrane is build into the hard shell, protecting the touch screen from errant damage.

Installing the Defender was effortless and took less than two minutes. First, the phone is secured in the hard shell, and then the rubbery skin is pulled around the unit. Unlike other cases, the molding of the Defender is made to precise specifications; each piece seemed meticulously engineered. After the silicon protection was stretched around the unit, each aperture was closed by a series well designed flaps, making an impenetrable seal. Unlike the clear case which allowed dust to enter, the Defender created a hermetic enclosure, stopping any dust from collecting on our screen.

Once Otterbox’s creation is applied onto the iPhone, the unit is transformed. The delicate, fingerprint-collecting device morphed into a secure, poised piece of hardware with just a bit more heft. I loved the feel of the Defender; the silicone skin felt less slippery than an unprotected iPhone and felt quite natural in my hand. Instantly, I become less worried about my phone, and the biweekly cleanings were no longer necessary.

Our caveats with the OtterBox Defender are few. At first when the casing was applied, the membrane created a small bubbling effect that resembled moisture caught between the clear face protection and the touch screen. A quick search online produced a very simple and inexpensive remedy- ‘dusting’ the inside of the membrane. Although I was skeptical at first, I applied a nearly invisible layer of talcum power to the Defender, which remedied the problem completely. Once applied, the outside cover of the Defender became imperceptible, and unlike our experience with the hard shell casing did not accumulate abrasions.

With that impediment negated, our only authentic qualm with the Defender arises from the case’s inset. Along the touch screens borders, the case extends upward about a fifth of an inch. While this likely protects the membrane from scrapes, it also makes touching the edges of the screen slightly cumbersome. I noticed I was consistently hitting the ‘v’ on the virtual keyboard instead of the space bar. More diminutive Defender owners may not have this same issue- my fingers are quite large.

At $49.99, the Otterbox Defender is about twenty dollars more than most of the other barebones casings on the market. For iPhone owners who require the best protection for their beloved hardware, we wholeheartedly endorse the Defender; it offers multiple elements of protection that far surpass anything else on the Apple accessory market.

  1. Wow, that sound awesome. Too bad I treat my iphone like a stepchild. If I ever get another one, I’ll probably invest in one of these.

  2. Protection is important, but three different parts seems like overkill. I guess if you’re ready hard on your phone it’s cool.

  3. Since AT&T does offer a protection plan unlike every other phone they sell, I’d recommend the best protection possible.

My iphone fell off a table and died costing me a pretty penny.

  4. I’ve dropped my phone at least three feet onto hard surfaces and never had a problem.

  5. Wow, I didn’t know this. I always get the insurance plans. My equipment always seems to ‘die’ right before it expires, netting me new hardware 😉

  6. Dude, I got a Defender and found this article. If that dusting trick works who are forever in my good graces!

  7. I went to the Apple store looking for a good case and I wish I had got this instead. I hope they take returns!

    Anyone know if they do?

  8. Review and otterbox site bookmarked. thanks.

  9. Nice, my wife’s using some not very good flip case they gave her when she bought her iphone, I might have to forward her this info.

  10. I was pretty close to buying one of these, but they seemed kinda big for me. I have a Fuze from iSkin right now, but it’s starting to develop cracks. Ugh.

  11. Man, I thought I was anal about my things. I can relate to keeping your stuff tidy, tho…

  12. I believe that your review could use a bit of testing before such an endorsement can be made. Perhaps a bit of field testing before throwing your hat over the wall in favor of Otterbox would set everyones minds at ease. Indeed.

  13. Is this available in the shops?

  14. $50 is one quarter the price of the Iphone. That seems a bit much, even if the protection is the best.

  15. Seems pretty pricey but it’s better than nothing if your someone like me who totally destroys their phones lol.

  16. Although I’d like to, I didn’t have the heart to drop my ‘Defended’ iphone a few feet onto the sidewalk.

Still, if it did accidentally fall, I cant think of another case I’d want on it, beyond the Otterbox.

  17. otterbox kicks ass all around!

  18. I have one of those clamshell case and yep, it got all scuffed up just like the review said. It also seems to hold finger grease on it too well.

  19. They offer a lifetime warranty on them?

  20. If they offered $10 off the price, I’d bite.

  21. If I had an iPhone I would probably buy this. What’s $50 when you’ve already purchased a $200 phone and a $200 2-year contract? For that much money, I’d use the heck out of it and the OtterBox looks like it’d make sure it can handle that kind of abuse.

I see so many people who buy the iPhone with a cheap rubber phone-condom and end up using it for no more than my basic phone is capable of. A little instant messaging, a few texts, even fewer phone calls, and the calendar and address book. That’s it.

  22. Really I have six pages of apps on mine. Most everyone I know is the same way.

  23. The price is hefty, but I will agree that is quite the feat of engineering. It’s amazing how precise they can fit these cases.

  24. That case is ugly as sin but it appears to protect the Iphone adequately.

  25. Why do they have to have a hole to show the Apple logo? Seems kinda dumb.

  26. I can personally voice for OtterBox products: They are superb and built milspec tough.

  27. My next purchase right here!

  28. Well if I ever do spend that kind of money on an Iphone I’ld most likely pick this up, or at least something similar. Many people who use Iphones have no case on them at all…

  29. Nice, might have to look into one of these.

  30. hmmmm seems like it protects it pretty well…. might look into this some more

  31. Hope I win Halo! =D

  32. Great review. I’ve been looking for a case. Thanks

  33. Sounds nice. If I came across one significantly discounted, I’d probably buy it.

  34. I’d snag one on clearance.

    That’s right, I’m cheap ; ;

  35. You can also use oils from your hands and checks to eliminate the watermark effect.

  36. Considering how expensive the iPhone is, I’d purchase this product at the initial price of $49.99. Even if it is just a piece of rubber and plastic. hurf-durf-deh-durrrr.

  37. Excellent review. I want one, even if they’re a bit on the ugly side.

  38. If I had an IPhone, I would strongly look into getting this, it seems like a reasonably well designed product.

  39. Great product, my office might be interested in these as some of my co-workers have been tearing through iPhones like they are nothing.

  40. I love my otterbox for my blackberry. Couple months ago I was riding on one of my horses and got thrown off….landing right on my phone. Well the phone came out in one piece(as well as the otterbox) but the dang thing did break my ribs lol. I guess thats saying something for quality. I wouldnt trade mine for anything.

  41. That is an odd case, but I don’t have an iPhone anyway, just an iTouch. My case isn’t that great though. That one is really intense. Great review.

  42. The oftterbox defender is momentarily discontinued, but can still be bought on amazon for $34.

  43. WHY? What’s going on?

  44. I’d also like more info on this.
