Cross Edge Reviewed

Cross Edge for the Playstation 3. Developer: Compile Heart, Publisher: NIS America

For gaming geeks, there are few moments as pleasingly delicious as the crossover. The hybridization of two fictional universes in a single title tends to raise the cool factor of a game exponentially. From Alex Kidd’s exploits in the Shinobi world, to the amalgam of the Marvel and Capcom worlds, gamers love the synergistic fusion of two isolated realms. Evidence to support this assertion can be found in the message boards flooded with news over upcoming Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, which mixes characters as diverse at Viewtiful Joe and Jun the Swan.

When I first heard that upcoming PS3 role-playing game, Cross Edge was going to integrate the worlds of Ar Tonelico, Marie no Atelier, Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Mana Khemia and Spectral Souls, I was overwhelmed with anticipation. Here was a distinguished ‘dream team’ of game characters that was nearly unprecedented in the RPG world. I speculated if Demitri would coexist peacefully alongside the perennial Prinnies, and how they would agree upon a battle system.

As it turns out, this combination of characters has a combat method reminiscent of Valkyrie Profile, carefully mixing strategy with turn-based melees, with just a dash of Disgaea’s combo system.  Players are allowed to place up to four characters on a three-by-four grid. Protagonists have three different reaches, from close-range hand to hand brawlers to marksmen and magic users that typically fill the flanks. Each character has a set amount of action points, which determines who strikes first, and the amount of attacks a player can execute on a single turn.

While initially daunting, I quickly grew accustomed to Cross Edge’s battle system. In order to be efficiently lethal, players strike with one of the face buttons, and then quickly switch to another character with R1 or L1 triggers. Subsequent strikes may trigger predetermined combos, or the R2 button can shift to a set of more powerful attacks. With the game’s counter time, battles vaguely resemble a combo-laden fighting game, especially on the harder difficulty setting of the game. While the combat mechanics are complicated, the depth and complexity of struggles helped maintain interest throughout the length of the title.

With such a diverse cast, one would expect a fragmented storyline cobbled together in order to unite the title’s eclectic troupe. While Cross Edge does employ the longstanding RPG staple of amnesia to connect its assemblage, each character remains true to form. Etna is still the devious beauty queen, while Morrigan is the perpetual succubus temptress. Each personality have been delicately preserved, and it’s dotingly faithful to its source material.

Beyond charming hand-drawn character portraits that fill the screen during dialogue sections, Cross Edge fails to impress visually. World maps and battle backgrounds look acceptable, but players may feel disappointed by the title’s sprites. Although characters are generally well animated, their pixeled visages look positively last-gen, and fail to harness any of the power of the PS3. With such visual simplicity, it’s hard to tolerate the occasional burst of slowdown during battle sequences. At least the title’s breaks, and combos are graphically impressive.

Despite the title’s strategic charms and enchanting cast of characters, I had a few qualms with Cross Edge. While spoken dialogue is delivered in either Japanese or via a respectable English voice-over, on-screen text is delivering painfully slow. Reading one line of conversation at a time can be become tiresome, although the game allows the character discussions to be automated with a press of a button. Inexplicably, your teammates serve double-duty in the game, manning the game’s storefronts. This can lead to a number of paradoxes, like when Morrigan was asking for currency to resurrect herself.

Despite some graphical misgivings and in-game absurdities, Cross Edge is a rewarding and enjoyable RPG experience. For many, merely seeing the populace of diverse game universe converge into a single title will be worth the price of admission. Others may enjoy the game for its surprisingly complex combat system that holds a near limitless amount of depth. If you’re like me, you’ll be able to look over the title’s weaknesses to revel in this love letter to the niche game geek. I’m only half embarrassed to state that Cross Edge has earned a place on my shelf next to a Prinny plush.

  1. There’s no question, this is a game made for me. (And DE, it sounds)

  2. Much better than the IGN(orant) review, I don’t think that guy even likes RPGs.

  3. I saw some critics were tearing the game up, nice to see an RPG fan give it a decent review.

  4. I think you’re right, I fall for every hybrid game. I went crazy over Namco x Capcom.

  5. I was looking at the bottom pic- man, you have been grinding!

  6. Isn’t this selling for $49.99? I’m there!

  7. Ive been waiting for this one since I was the Japanese release was out.

  8. Good review- I’m glad to see some people are liking the game.

  9. Great review deagle. The battle system sounds great.

  10. Nice review. The other one I saw just hated on the game

  11. Great tutorial in game for how to use the battle system

1 gripe about it is when there is no actions left it still counts down
((however if still ahve active points left can switch char and keep fighting)so it does kind of make sence)

the battle system and skill leveling is nice change . as well as get x skill to y to unlock skill z.

synthesis / upgrading / getting tier of items for overkill was a great addition as well.

casts from many differnt games made it feel a bit like soequiden (sp) the costumes were a cute little bonus.

I find you do get locked into 1 set of characters once you get heal skill with the raetell aurica from ar tonelico (amazing game) you almost never take her out of the party again.

as you get beter weapon it alows use of all 4 ability slots and the game becomes a bit more fun. the stratigy involved with killing / overkilling is great . replenishing a characters ap for beeting /overkiling/ breaking gagues just for more overkilling posibilty and retardely large number of damage.

minus the cooldown timer i’d give the game 7/10

    replay value 4/5
graphics 3/5 (old gen are still good)
progress 5/5 progressing though the game was fluent and nicely laid out.
cut scenes 2.5/5 cut scenes were great
however the odd time voice would not be active and it kind of killed the thrill
    of getting a cut scene.

  12. Awesome tips thanks!

  13. I never heard of this game until now. Sounds like an RPG I could get into, tho.

  14. HAHA, noticed that too.

  15. Wow, the graphics look really PS2 quality 🙁

Sure this isn’t a downloadable title?

  16. There’s probably a small audience for this, but I’m one of them.

  17. Great. You should right a FAQ for the site.

  18. Talk about niche. An RPG for ultra RPG nerds. My friends are going to soil their pants over this.

  19. When did that one get released?

  20. Slowdown in a game that looks that bad?

  21. How many characters are in the game altogether?

  22. The infinite E

Yeah for English and Japanese voices.

  23. I’m so glad I came across this review. I read another review which basically said the game was worthless, and I would have skipped it.

  24. Never take Morrigan out of your party, she’s the best character by far.

  25. Here’s a list: Main characters
    Yūto Kannagi
    Mikoto Aiba
    May

    Atelier Marie characters
    Marlone

    Mana-Khemia 2 characters
    Liliane Vehlendorf
    Rozeluxe Meitzen
    Wuim

    Darkstalkers characters
    Morrigan Aensland

    Demitri Maximoff
    Lilith
    Jedha Dohma

    Disgaea characters
    Etna
    Prinny

    Ar Tonelico characters

    Aurica Nestmile
    Misha Arsellec Lune
    Shurelia

    Spectral Souls characters
    Meu

    Blazing Souls characters
    Zeros

  26. San Spectral Soul sucked bad. Why include them?

  27. Great review. I’ve only seen two that gave it about 3/10.

  28. RPGs aren’t really about the graphics, but the story.

  29. If it has a Prinny, I’ll get it. DE having a Prinny plush is too cute.

  30. Playstation Mag gave it a 3/10. That has me worried.

  31. Who’s on the cover of this?

  32. Good review, but not a game I’d like.

  33. I don’t know, you guys gave it a B, but two others basically said it flat out sucked.

  34. Wow heard of Cross Edge before. Going to scope this one out.

  35. Sounds complicated in a good way. The cast really isn’t anyone I’m familar with.

  36. Good for you dude. PS Mag and IGN Are doing their usual, “You gave indie sites free copies before us so we’re going to slag this game to teach you a lesson” crap they usually do.

Plus IGN was stupid enough to give this game to a person that doesn’t get Strategic RPG’s at all, which compounds the comedy.

Nice to see another professional reviewer actually taking the time to play the game and give the engine a workout.

    -Alex Lucard, EIC Diehard GameFAN.

  37. Yep the guy at IGN seemed like he was being way too hard on the game for no good reason.

  38. Cool, at least two people like the game.

  39. Any1 know the best price on this right now?

  40. Seems really niche, not in a good way.

  41. I think Cross Edge is a game that is very picky amongst its players. I know that I fully enjoy it, despite knowing it’s actually very repetitive. But like Assassin’s Creed, some found that boring and repetitive, but I enjoyed that.

  42. RPG’s just rule!!

  43. Old school RPG’s aren’t really my thing, but this title has me interested for some strange reason.

  44. I hate to say it, but Morrigan alone pretty much sells this game to me.

  45. Thanks for the review….I may have to pick this up…..

  46. It’s been getting pretty bad reviews, but I can’t help but be interested in this game. Maybe I’ll pick it up for $20 or so.

  47. I’ve been wanting to try it, sometimes i wish i had a PS3.

  48. now all i need is a ps3…… :/

  49. “Cross Edge was going to integrate the worlds of Ar Tonelico, Marie no Atelier, Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Mana Khemia and Spectral Souls”

ok you win. I’m intrigued now.

  50. It’s really so sad that the reviews are so bad for this game. It could have been really good… But…

  51. Looks pretty cool.

  52. I’m digging the whole cross over story and I know NIS is great at making this quirky yet crazy RPG’s. Plus Darkstalkers added as well as Disagea, shoot might be really enjoyable. I might pick this title up for my PS3 real soon. Awesome review!
