CGS – Season Two

As basketball fans will be watching the Lakers and Celtics
reignite a longtime rivalry, a new season of intense competition will be beginning
its second season on Monday. The
Championship Gaming Series (or CGS) will be
kicking things off at Electronic Art’s development studio, as six teams from
across the U.S. battle for supremacy, before moving on to a global cyber-Olympics.

While gaining popularity here in the U.S., the CGS in huge
is Asia. Over 80,000 spectators watched the Pan-Asian final held at the world’s
first eSports arena, created through a joint venture between the (Chinese) Wuhan
government and CGS. Locally, after the initial series, play continues at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, CA- home of last year’s E3 convention.

Competitors will be playing FIFA 2008, Counter-Strike: Source,
Dead or Alive 4, and Forza Motorsport 2 during nightly matches from June 2nd
through June 13th. Tech-Gaming
readers living in/around Los Angeles are eligible for free tickets here. While
readers around the globe will be able to watch the championship unfold on DirecTV Channel 101.

We at Tech-Gaming will be following the action closely, not only is hopes of improving our own game, but to ensure that competitive play reaches the audience it rightfully deserves here in the U.S.

  1. Sounds cool, I’ve heard of MLG, but this looks insanely bigger.

Bout time of this type of thing.

  2. I’m surprised it taken this long for competitive gaming to take off. I know it’s huge in Korea, people jam in stadiums to watch people play Starcraft.

  3. Didn’t they have a Pokemon Convention in Japan a few years ago. People crammed the stadium to play.

Pedophile convention, too- Gotta catch ’em all!

  4. Sounds cool. I’ll tune in at least once to check it out. Oh, and that girl in the photo has some really big thighs. Who could game with that going on?

  5. Why those particular games? Is is because they are the most balanced? You’d think they’d play COD4 or Halo…

  6. Uh, those game are pretty universal. None one really plays Halo in Japan, COD4 too.

  7. Thanks, free for the free tickets. Although I can’t go, my brother lives in Los Angeles and is going now.

  8. Do the winners get a date with the FragDolls?

  9. Sounds great. I agree with others, this is something needed in the gaming world.

Maybe this will make the industry appear a bit more ‘legitimate’.

  10. Cool idea. I’m rooting for the team closest to Kentucky!

Man, why don’t they have tournaments like that out here?

  11. I heard about this before; they even have coaches!

Imagine the kids in 5 years- Mon, my Halo 5 coach told me to drink more Mt. dew!!!!!

  12. Sweeeeeeeeet

  13. PixelJunkWinos

Wish I had Direct TV now. Who cares about basketball?

  14. Man, how did I miss try outs 😉

  15. Will watch. thanks for the info.

  16. I could school those children in DOA4… They should bring it to Jersey.

  17. Sounds like something I got to watch.

  18. I got tickets, thanks techgaming and Digg

  19. Go NY! Man, for not hearing about this, their site is extensive. They have a webcam for the training apt.

  20. 🙂 Cool, I’d love to see gaming grow, too.

  21. After winning the championship, the team boldly screamed, “Were going to CompUSA!”

  22. I want to see a physical fight between two players.

  23. Will they be playing around E3?

  24. Man, they look geeky, even for gamers.

  25. Could go either way; watching games can be a bit boring if the commentary isnt up to snuff. Still Ill give it a shot.

  26. I guess once you hit 25 or so, your gaming career is over. Judging from the pics, only.

  27. What kind of beer goes with e-sport gaming?

  28. I hope you guys cover this. I don’t live near LA, nor have Direct TV.

Hey, instant posts. I like the change!

  29. I’d really like to see two competitive teams play a more strategic game like Pixeljunk Monsters for Desktop Defense.

  30. Do you think these guys work out Rocky Balboa style before the big match?

  31. Unlicked,

You mean inject Botox? Oh, thats Sylvester Stallone style. Nevermind

  32. No, I mean like punching big slabs of meat in a freezer while Paulie was slamming down hooch.
