A Howling Good Time with Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3

Both the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation Store
have seen a slew of twin-stick shooters. Two Assault Heroes games, two Mutant
Storm
titles, Geometry Wars, Smash TV, and Super Stardust HD are just a few
examples of the titles that fit into this popular genre. Recently, Capcom and
developer Backbone Entertainment released Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3,
a sequel to the seminal arcade title, which uses the classic control scheme.

Players control one of three selectable characters with the
left stick, while firing in 360 degrees with the right. The right bumper throws
grenades, while the left trigger destroys all infantry units around the player.
The controls become instinctual after just a few minutes of play, and hark back
to a time when game control and was refreshingly simplistic. Although the control scheme should be familiar to players, WoB: Commando 3 offers enough excitement in its gameplay to attract twin stick veterans.

Enemy bullet speeds, numbers and trajectories rarely feel
unfair, forcing the player to be constantly moving. Although the AI has the
tendency to repawn, your character is given enough firepower to turn this
threat into a minor inconvenience. Boss encounters give the player an overhead
view of the action, and recreate the feel of classic shmup perfectly.  WoB: Commando 3 doesn’t give players the ability to
continue, until players destroy the final boss.

Graphically, the game’s models look sharp and contain enough
polygons to seem fully realized. However, the game does show sporadic drops in
framerate as the title seems to load in new data. A constant framerate of 60
fps would have helped the game measurably. We appreciated the comic book
stylings which closely resemble the recent Penny Arcade Adventures game,
thematically.

Players have the option of online or offline co-op play with
up to two other players. While we had a bit of difficulty finding other gamers to
play with, once we found our fellow liberators, being online was a relatively
lag-free experience, although a bit chaotic with the amount of on-screen
mayhem.

Fans of old-school arcade action will want to at least
download and try the demo that is on both the Marketplace and Playstation
Store. While the game isn’t quite as polished as we would have liked, we still
had a very enjoyable time clearing the virtual battlefields of all enemies.

Final Grade: B

As a further incentive for 360 owners, purchasers of WoB:
Commando 3
will be able to download the Super Street Fighter II HD Remix on
June 25th. We recently contacted Tim Ng, Associate PR Manager for
Capcom Entertainment to answer a few questions about the beta:

Tech-Gaming: Will the beta have single
player or is it multiplayer only?
Tim Ng: On and offline multiplayer
only.  There is no single player.

T-G:
We know the art has been redrawn by Udon; have additional frames of animation
been included, or for playability has the number of animations remained
constant?
Ng: There are no new additional frames,
so the frame rate, animation, and gameplay timing will all remain the same.
But, there we are adding a few moves, such as Ryu’s fake fireball, that
use existing frames.

T-G: What is the native resolution of
the game?
Ng: 1080p.

T-G: Any connectivity features with the
upcoming SF4?

Ng: Unfortunately no.

Thanks Tim, for your time!

  1. If I download this, its because I couldn’t resist the SSF super duper HD remix beta.

  2. Great review. I liked the demo. Old school update for new school hardware.

  3. Why isn’t the demo for PS3 owners?!?!

  4. Played the demo, didn’t like it. I thought it was too much like Assault Heroes.

  5. Cool interview. Can’t wait to play the new Street Fighter, the graphics look hot!

  6. Pretty nice graphics for a DLC game. Go Capcom!

  7. Waiting for Bionic Commando. TG, when will that come out? Thats the one I want.

  8. With no new frames of animation, I’m skeptical about this one. I thought this was a redo.

  9. Why didn’t they just the game Commando 3?

  10. You guys come up with some laughable titles!

  11. Downloading the demo as I type this. Sounds like fun.

  12. Sounds like a cool game. I might try it.

  13. Cool review, I’m interested in SSF2HDR

  14. Played the demo. I might buy the game for 400 points, but 800 is a bit too much. I have no interest in the Street Fighter game. I played enough Sf in one life time, thank you.

  15. I don’t know if it’s a howling good time- but good enough to keep from yawning.

  16. I love Capcom games. They are the one publisher who doesn’t disappoint. Will buy this game this week.

  17. Super Stardust>every other shooter mentioned. It’s a peice of art!

I hope they make a sequel.

  18. Only 5 levels? That’s not enough for my 10 dollars.

  19. I’m looking forward to the beta now. How long will the beat last?

  20. Nice review; great new look for the site. Very professional!

  21. I’d like to see more Capcom classic remade; Ghosts and Goblins would be a great game to recreate.

  22. Just looking for a review, when I came across this site. Thanks, just what I needed!

  23. Why do guys put those stupid borders around all your pictures? I wanted to use the pics, but they are ugly with those damn borders. Lose ’em.

  24. I love old school arcade games, so I’m going to check this out tonight.

  25. Street Fighters going to look gorgeous in 1080P. Although I’d really love to see Street Fighter Alpha redone.

  26. The beta is now live, enjoy!

Edit: Looks like it’s no longer available. Sorry.

  27. Why do you tease us? 😉

  28. Who cares about the beta, I never use Ryu or Ken anyways. Dalsim is where its at.

  29. Whats up with the embers in the prison level that look like enemy bullets. Cheap!

  30. Run and Gun games were always a favorite of mine.

  31. Just downloaded- controls while in the vehicles become awful. Otherwise a pretty solid game.

I did die a few times because of the slowdown mentioned in the review. That felt cheap.

  32. 2nd the ghosts and goblins update. That would be great.

  33. Tried out the demo, while fun it wasnt 10 bucks fun.

  34. Just played it. I would give it a “C”; seems very average to me.

  35. Why the hell does a relatively simple 2D games like this have slowdown. It can’t be the hardware because both the 360 and PS3 push major amounts of polygons around.

It can be only one thing, sloppy programming. Please make sure you games are coded well, developers!

  36. I played it, but didn’t howl once. A few small smiles appeared when I killed the bosses, though.

  37. My impressions of the SSFIIHDR Beta:

    1 stage
    2 characters
    4:3
    Framerate drops
    Ugly art

    Man, Capcom you got me.

  38. Not the worst game I ever played (Commando 3), but not the best either.

  39. Pretty fun little fun, but I found it incredibly hard.

  40. Graphics don’t look ugly to me!

They look comparable to most modern 2D games.

  41. Geometry Wars is still the best twin stick shooter game. Nothing else comes close.

  42. I thought the graphics were very impressive for a download title.

Bought it after two minutes of play- currently addicted.

  43. Nice review, I do remember the original game.

  44. Was that the game you had me play the other day? It was fun.

  45. I had commando for the NES- First video game I ever bought. Well, it was grandma’s money, but I bought it!

  46. Yes, it was this game I forced you to play.
