New Releases 9/12-9/18: Reach Around (and Abound) Edition

With all the attention devoted to this week’s flagship software and hardware releases (Halo Reach and The Playstation Move, respectively) gamers might be forgiven if they neglected this remainder of this week’s new releases. Yet, they’d miss a number of noteworthy titles, including the latest installments in the Professor Layton and Phantasy Star franchises. Unobservant gamers might also miss one the latest salvo’s in the PS2’s lifespan; it’s doubtful the beloved hardware will see another three-release week before joining the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 in the great console heavens.

DesertEagle’s Pick: With all the hype surrounding Halo Reach, overlooking the title could lead to accusations of being an undercover Covenant operative. As a FPS fan, I’ll be picking the title up along with the latest installment of Professor Layton; a suitable ying to the Spartan’s yang.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: I’ve been in an abusive relationship with Phantasy Star for close to two decades, so it goes without saying that I’ll be knee deep in Phantasy Star Portable 2 this week.  Dawn of Heroes makes are turn appearance to our new release list; if it actually comes out this time, I’d love to check that one out too.

TideGear’s Pick: If I could pick not having a cold, I would. Alas, that checkbox is greyed out in my immune system. I’m not finding this weeks releases too exciting, but if Halo Reach ends up being the best Halo yet, it may be time to return to the series.

About Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  3. Wow, a pretty big week for releases but only Master Chief will get my money.

  8. Hmm, I wonder what game is going to sell the most this weak.

I haven’t really been following the media assault.

  14. No Reach review today? When’s it going up?

  15. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future might be a go.

    Hey, where Karnov’s pick?

  16. welcome back brutes! Meet my assault rifle!

  17. You do know this one take place 25 years later. Master Chief will barely be in it, I’m told.

  18. I’ll be “reach”-ing for my wallet.

  19. Microsoft’s PR arm didn’t send a copy. In fact, they didn’t even respond to the request.

  20. not you guys too. Your friends at Cheapassgamer have been whining about not getting a copy either. Sack up and buy one.

  21. Do you really need a review? 1up, Gamepro, D-tard, and Joystiq all gave it perfect scores.

  22. is Racquet Sports a move title?

  23. What will you guys be reviewing this week?

  24. why does everyone pick on Destructoid here?

  25. I’m surprised they didn’t send you a copy. You seem to have a pretty active base of users.

  26. Phantasy Star Portable 2, cause NOLA said so.

  27. Roscoe Pepperspray

After seeing ODST’s price drop really quick, I’m going to wait on Halo Reach

  28. never heard of Swords. Looked it up and it seems interesting.

  29. I’ll have NHL 11 up today.

    Next up:

  30. I went into my time machine and brought this back with me (along with the winning Lotto numbers):

TideGear’s Pick: All year I’ve been excited for the release of one game, and now it’s finally out. I might just have to brave the crowds to get my copy of Fancy Nancy: Tea Party Time this week.

    Love ya, Adam!!!

  31. isn’t Codie’s new F1 sim coming out this week?

  32. I was hoping youd fit Patrician IV into that as well 😉

  33. Reach for me.

  34. a lot of stuff Ive never heard of. What’s Alpha and Omega?

  35. it’s hard to believe people still buy Cabela games.

  38. that a crazyass week! I wish it was my schedule.

  39. cool. I’ll give you $10 for the winning numbers 😉

  40. The Reach demo was cool, but not $60 cool.

  41. I’ll try the King of Fighters demo out.

  42. No picks from Tidegear?

  43. I bet this week’s trivia is going to be about Legend of Guardians 😉

  44. whats this a Lord of the Rings game? Has there ever been a decent one?

  45. The XBox/PS2 brawler (Twin Towers?) wasn’t bad at all, if I remember correctly.

Third Age for Game Cube was pretty sweet.

  46. Sonic Adventure for me. It’s 800 points ($10) which seems fair. $15 would have made me skip it.

  47. nothing for me. No interest in Reach. Unlike the rest of the world, I’ve always been kind of meh about the series.

  48. Scooby-Doo! and the Spooky Swamp cuz it’s on three consoles.

  49. dude that really sucks. I really like your review. Sure, the site isn’t the prettiest, but you and NOLA are awesome writers.

  50. nothing for me this week. Lots of releases, but nothing exciting.

  51. I really don’t think Dawn of Heroes will ever come out at this point.

  52. I liked the Gladiator Begins demo!

  53. The Halo Reach commercial may have pushed me over the edge.

  54. I totally agree.

  55. Deal or No Deal on the Wii? The girls are going to look awful I bet!

  56. My pick is vitamin C for Adam.

  57. I may have to get Professor Layton.

  58. I’ll take a Halo Reach.

  59. Adam, is that why there’s been no podcasts?

  60. Welp, I just finished editing the 3 hour, dual-week Podcastravaganza, but my headphones blew out at the end (this has been a theme for me this month). I am uploading it now for approval, but there is a good chance it will sound like poop. We’ll see how it goes.

  61. I’m expecting one long 3 hour fart if you say it sounds like poop.

  62. Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest is also for the PS3.

    Adam, are you feeling better?

  63. I guess it was poop?!?

  64. just got my copy of Reach. I cant wait to play tonight.
