Rob’s pick: I appreciate the different approaches fighting games use for control schemes, from Street Fighter’s light, medium, and heavy punches and kicks to Tekken’s one-button-per-limb setup. Like Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive pares combat down to a rock-paper-scissors-style triangle, and that design remains genuinely intriguing and pretty accessible even as its climbed from three to five buttons.

For me, the one problem has been Team NINJA’s approach to DLC. The total cost of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round’s downloadable content exceeded $1,000. Honestly, that kind of monetization is a huge turnoff. This time, Dead or Alive 6 Last Round launches with an affordable price, 29 playable characters, plenty of costumes, and only Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond currently waiting in the aftermarket. But I understand if the lack of a discounted upgrade or cross-play could annoy loyalists.

And while part of me is interested in Star Fox, I don’t know if I need to play yet another iteration of the same game. And at the risk of contradiction, Blood Bowl definitively needs to return; if only to wipe the memory of trying to play the buggy PSP version from my memories.

Ryan’s pick: I’m going with Star Fox because I absolutely loved the game back in the 90s’ and it’s been so long that I don’t really remember much at this point save for some of the final boss battles. It’s a clear nostalgia pick for me, but it will be fun to play this one with the family and relive some of the really fun shoot ’em up moments from the series. There also are some challenges added that will scratch the completionlist itch I’ve been having lately.

Dead or Alive absolutely gets a brief mention this week as well as I really have always enjoyed the series for how fluid the battles were and how inviting it was. I missed DoA 6 when it first released in 2019, so I think this is a pretty safe choice in how much content is included and it includes improved current-gen graphics. My favorite character is Honoka so I’ll probably be spending some of my initial game time re-learning combos and unlocking new costumes.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Dead or Alive is back! Dead or Alive is back! MARIE ROSE IS BACK! It’s been a long time between drinks – so long I wondered if the series was on ice. But Koei never lets me down. Not only is Dead or Alive back, but the team is making it pretty clear they’re doubling back down on the fan service going forward, so yay. Gravure fighting for all.

I am bummed out that it didn’t get a Switch 2 release, though. I would love to have Marie Rose on the go. The other game I’ll be picking up this week is Warhammer Blood Bowl. It has been a long time since I last played one of these Cyanide takes on the iconic board game (I think I may have played the first, and that’s it?), so I’m keen to see where they’ve taken the series.
