New Releases for the Week of October 30th, 2011

Undoubtedly, the sheer number of new game releases this week’s is daunting. Yet remove the imminent clearance-bin filler (surely, the world isn’t ready for three Cabala games in a single week) and the choices are filtered down to a few noteworthy titles: Uncharted 3, Sonic Generations, and Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Fittingly, this trifecta of titles is perfect for Target’s buy two, get one free sale. Just make sure you get there early so you aren’t forced to pick up Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town as your freebie.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North (Collector’s Edition)

DesertEagle’s Pick: As a big fan of Snowblind Studios previous action/role-playing efforts (Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms) I’m anxious to see what the developer can do with the LOTR license. Beyond War in the North, I’ll also be grabbing Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Samurage’s Pick: It’ll be some delicious and well-anticipated Sonic Generations for me. But I’ll be staying away from Target’s three-for-one for three reasons: law school, lack of a PS3, and my yearly dose of zombie Halo action this week.

BlueSwim’s Pick: I’m going to second Sage on the Sonic Generations recommendation. The demo, while short, pressed all the right buttons for me when it comes to Sonic games. The gameplay was borderline too fast, the environments are bright and colorful, and the classic baddies ooze with charm. Nostalgia alone should make this worth a rental, if nothing else. One other release that that I’ll mention is that the November wave of DLC for Forza Motorsport 4 is coming out this week. That’s right, I’m giving the thumbs-up to some DLC. Why is this significant? You’ll just have to wait and hear my bound-to-be-controversial views on DLC on the next podcast.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: I have really been looking toward to Sonic Generations ever since I got a taste at E3, but if I had a gun to my head and could only pick one game this week, I’d pick Uncharted 3 without any hesitation. How could I pock anything but the sequel to one of the greatest games ever made?

  1. First.

I have a right to do that because I was just checking the site to see if you had posted the new releases yet.

  2. Yep- post by 7:00 PM CST and you win a cookie from me.

  3. that’s a lot of games coming out this week!

What’s special about the Double O Edition of Goldeneye?

  4. Why do I see “Generator Rex” and see “Generator GEX”?

    What is wrong with me?

  5. I will buy U3: Drake’s Deception, if I can afford it. BF3 broke me.

  6. longschlongsilver

I’m amazed they are still making PS2 games. When will it end?

I’ll give Sonic Generations a try despite the cheap demo which I didn’t even get to play before it expired.

  7. Ive never played a Cabela game? What am I missing?

  8. is Hydrophobia: Prophecy the same wreck that was on 360?

  9. U3 is the only worthwhile game I’m seeing and I’m a 360 owner.

  10. What is this kabbalah game you speak of? 😉

  11. How GoldenEye 007: Reloaded supposed to be? It’s a remake of Wii game which was a remake of the N64 game, right?

  12. Is there that Voltron game coming out this week, or soon?

  13. Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town…eight weeks too early.

  14. @Samurage Can you tell me how zombies are in Halo please? I’ve never heard of this.

    • Objection!

“Zombie (or Zombies, Pandemic, and Dawn of The Dead) is a player-created game variant originating in Halo 2, although variants are also played in Halo PC. It’s roots are now untraceable, and has become so popular that it has been translated into Halo 3 as Infection, with a few minor edits and many more custom game tools. The basic rules involve two teams: a small starting green (or blue in some cases) team and a relatively large red team. There are no shields; red sports Shotguns and Pistols and green (the zombies) sports Energy Swords. Whenever a red team member is killed, they must switch to green team. The ultimate goal is to last as long as possible without getting killed by the Zombies, and becoming one themselves. “

      • That’s like the Tag (Virus) mode in Forza 4 that has its hooks in me. I’d try Zombie, but being an noob in Halo means I’d probably be called every offensive thing under the Sun.

        • Is than an official mode in Forza 4?

          • Yep! It’s a blast to play with a lot of people in the room. At the beginning of the game, almost everyone behind the it car turns around and starts driving around the track the wrong way, leading to some head-on wrecks that tje it car usually uses to expand his team. I’d love to play it with some T-Gers some night.

      • Anyway, the halo zombie is a mode that got started several halloweens ago. Its a solid variant, and a lot of fun. it IS now playable in general as “infection” (no team colors really) but usually for Halloween there some new mods and such. Check it out (no need to worry about being a NOOB, its not a normal game type anyway).

  15. 90% of this week’s release I have no interest in ever playing.

  16. Sonic Generations for 360.

  17. I’m going to call Sean’s Sonic Generations pick right now.

  18. Uncharted 3 even though it got an 8/10 by at least one site.

  19. What are your Halloween costumes?

Blue, I know you’ll be a Sailor Moon character, and Deagle will probably be Hitman, but what about the rest of the crew?

  20. I’m coming after you, my precious!

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

  21. I’m coming after you, my precious!

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

  22. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded

  23. Deagle, you better review Fate/Extra. No one else will get it and probably 5.0 it.

  24. I’m going with SeanNOLA’s pick, because I’m broke now.
