New Releases for the Week of July 17th, 2011

Despite a 140-year crater between  franchise entries, Reverend Ray McCall’s stilted fire-and-brimstone chatter still permeates through Call of Juarez: The Cartel. With dialog which includes zingers such as, “And I saw a pale horse, and he who sits upon it, and his name is Death. And he has a bullet with your f%#king name on it.” the title may have transformed barren cat-houses into neon-lit strip clubs, but the nefarious banditos are still in need of salivation at the end of a carbine. Some things never change.

DesertEagle’s Pick: By delivering an action-RPG with sumptuous hard-painted artwork and an interactive narrator, developer Supergiant Games might as well reach into my pocket and pull $15 out. I’m powerless to resist a title like Bastion, which feels like a high-def recreation of beloved 16- and 32-bit real-time adventures.

BlueSwim’s Pick: PlayStation 3 owners should jump on Comix Zone with two feet. It’s a tough beat-’em-up, but its stylish comic book panel levels are unique and definitely worth playing through. It should be noted, though, that Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is a much better deal than buying Comix Zone separately. Either way, get it.

About Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. I heard the new Call of Juarez looks rushed and is not worth even $20.

  2. Captain America: Super Soldier might be worth a try even though I know 85% of movie/comic games suck.

  3. I’ll only pick up with Smurfs if the game gets an M-rating and I can pimp Smurfette out in a prostitution sim.

  4. Is Catherine out yet?

    (Checks calendar)

    Sigh….

  5. CoJ games always have the worst dialog. It’s like they are translated for something.

  6. I would just as soon let Casey Anthony babysit as pay $60 for Call of Juarez.

  7. If Comix Zone the old Genesis game?

  8. What’s the early word on Cap, Deagle?

  9. Things never change? Correction- War never changes.

Limbo is just a little bit late, isn’t it.

  11. There’s a button below the add comment button now.

    Very cool.

    My pickup will be:

  12. I heard Dead Block was pretty weak.

  13. Bastion seems cool, but I need to see more of it.

  14. Too short, but I’ll take it.

  15. Nothing for me this week, but I might try Bastion.

  16. Bastion looks really cool.

  17. I still havent played Bound in Blood. It’s in my pile of shame.

  18. Comix Zone is $5.00, so finding a copy of the Sonic Collection is the way to go.

  19. Cap will be captured this week.

  20. Custard's Revenge

Anyone want to bet that Call of Juarez: The Cartel will drop to $30 before September?

  21. Sage and NOLA are too busy for picks this week?
