Rob’s pick: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is the easiest recommendation I’ll probably make all month. That said, the one caveat is that a playthrough of the 1st Chapter is essential to appreciate this volume. Here, Estelle’s search for her brother Joshua provides this sequel personal motivation while the emergence of Ouroboros gives plenty of political drama to soak up. Sure, Falcom’s patient world-building might test anyone who prefers a rollicking adventure, but few studios make role-playing games that feel as detailed or consequential. In a perfect world, Nihon Falcom would be sweeping gaming awards.

This time out, additions like the Brave Rush and an expanded selection of Crafts and S-Crafts keep combat fresh. Meanwhile, activities like fishing, poker, cooking, and new playable allies should also provide plenty of diversions when you need a break from saving Liberl. Elsewhere, BIRDCAGE is a solid bullet hell, especially if you appreciate a shooter that tests your weapon-switching as much as your ability to dodge projectiles.

Ryan’s pick: For me the SILENT HILL franchise delivers every time so SILENT HILL: Townfall is the go-to for me this week. I’m curious to see how this will feel being that you play from a strictly first-person perspective the whole time, but my hope is that this may help with some of the jump scares that are a signature for the series. I’m speaking directly to those mannequins from SILENT HILL 2 when I mention this. The game is also built in Unreal Engine 5, so I think that visually it should deliver a really eerie experience. If horror and suspense aren’t your thing, you may want to abstain.

Eagle Knight Paradox gets a quick mention this week for having some light NES version of Strider parallels, especially with how some of the melee animations appear. I really like the mech theme and the fact that the action is a mix of both melee and ranged attacks. The main character’s Regent hairstyle absolutely reminds me of Takemichi from Tokyo Revengers so overall this one is checking many of my boxes.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is quite possibly my favourite game in the series… and that is one of my favourite franchises. It’s a brilliant blend of everything that has made Fire Emblem great for decades, with some meaningful and interesting steps forward and new ideas. It’s a true epic in every sense, and it has set an all-new standard for tactical RPGs going forward.

I am quite interested in Silent Hill: Townfall too. After the series spent several years in the doldrums, the remake of SH2 and the brilliance of F really brought things back and really rejuvenated my interest in it again. I haven’t really been following what Townfall is about, so hopefully it’s a nice surprise.
