New Releases: July 9-15, 2026

This week’s game releases offer familiar franchises and some intriguing upstarts. Digimon Story Time Stranger makes its way to Switch, bringing the monster-taming RPG series to owners of Nintendo’s hardware. Denshattack! delivers fast-paced arcade action train-skating while Be Missed and Remembered: The Letter from Mayoiga (pictured) stands out as one of the week’s most remarkable narratives, with readers transported to the Japan countryside, circa 1972. Rob’s pick: I still love 3D platformers and have been having a good time with Teeto lately. The hook here is that you can copy environmental objects which each give your character a second ability. Smartly, developer Eat Pant Games (a couple from New Zealand), ensures the puzzling doesn’t overshine the action, keeping the solution set small and the action relatively breeze. It’s also easy on the eye, which never hurts. Tony Hawk with trains seems like a wild idea, so I might just have to hop aboard Denshattack! for some loco-motive action. I just hope that substance keeps up with style since SkateBIRD let me down.

While I also recommend Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, which strengthens Relink’s endgame. That said, portable performance with all the summons dropped to just south of manageable for me on Steam Deck. Ragnarok deserves a beastly rig or a portable handheld. Finally, Be Missed and Remembered: The Letter from Mayoiga’s transitional slow burn has me glued to my Steam Deck screen.

Ryan’s pick: Denshattack! was casually recommended to me earlier this week as many that know me know that I like mashups and this game does exactly that. At its core the game is a skateboarding game but instead of using a board you use a train to perform similar tricks. It’s certainly unique, but I really like how developer Undercoders are doubling down on that quirkyness through Japan-themed visuals and sounds. It even looks like there are grandiose boss battles, so I’m not exactly sure what to expect from this one but I think that’s what is drawing me to it.

I want to give a brief nod to the action-roguelike Ascend to ZERO as the time manipulation mechanic in it looks like it could be pretty interesting and something a bit new of this genre of games. The chibi art mixed with some pretty vibrant VFX equally makes it stand out, so I think this could be another one to investigate if you are looking for a roguelike fix.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I missed Digimon Story Time Stranger when it released on most platforms last year, but I’ve really enjoyed catching up with it on Switch 2. It’s been a major hit for Digimon and Bandai Namco, and now I understand why; smart 3 vs 3, turn-based battles, fun narrative, and plenty of depth to the Digimon collecting and training. I personally don’t think the series quite has the outright charm of Pokemon, but when Digimon is this good, it is a genuine contender to the Game Freak throne.

Also this week, and with the full disclaimer that I *loathe* Ubisoft as a company, I am looking forward to Assassin’s Creed. I’m a history buff through and through, and I particularly enjoyed the “Americas trilogy,” as it’s a part of history I wasn’t so well studied in. The original Black Flag inspired me to learn more about the golden age of pirates, and I’m looking forward to seeing that game in modern remastered glory. Please don’t hate me for liking a Ubisoft game and series. I do it through gritted teeth, I swear.
