Rob’s pick: I have an odd relationship with action role-playing games. While I’m not particularly drawn to the genre, once I do start playing, I can get a bit obsessed with them. As such, I’m interested in The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. Team Asano’s previous efforts have delivered solid play and plot, with recent efforts showcasing that gorgeous HD-2D art style that I’m a sucker for. Give me some classical Ys-style combat and I’ll make friends with Elliot faster than E.T.

Sure, DUNGEON RAZE’s arrival on Switch probably won’t get much notice. But don’t overlook this doujin gem, which combines dungeon crawling, shooting, and just a bit of Katamari Damacy-style power scaling. The only problem is the Switch tax, which triples the price of the original Steam release. And Ryan is absolutely right – we need that plucky Tiger Woods PGA energy back.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I came to The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales for the art. I’m obsessed with the aesthetic of the HD-2D engine and will play anything created with it. I stayed for the gameplay. I honestly haven’t had so much fun with a classical ‘Zelda-like” since Link’s Awakening. Something really clicked with the dungeon design in particular, even if I didn’t find the narrative all that compelling.

I’d also be lying to myself if I didn’t say I was intrigued with R-Type Tactics I & II Cosmos. I’m absolutely terrible at R-Type. I don’t think I’ve managed to get through a single level of any of the series, now that I think about it. But I do enjoy what these games represent. Will a “tactics” take on R-Type be more accessible to me and therefore something I’ll love even more? Let’s find out!

Ryan’s pick: Action-RPGs are my thing so The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales takes top position this week. The HD sprites, VFX, and battle sequences when adventuring pretty much check every box for aesthetics and mechanics that I like, so this one is the clear winner. I recently finished my Season 13 Rank IX grind for Diablo IV with the new warlock class, so I’m absolutely in the market for something a little grindy but a bit slower and with lower stakes, especially after pushing higher level The Pit runs over and over again.

I’ve been playing disc golf for about 27 years or so, and I can’t really say that the sport has had a solid presence in the gaming scene up until this point. Granted, it’s a bit more niche than regular golf or other prominent sports, but it has a very low barrier of entry and most courses are in community parks and are typically free. Disc Golf Masters caught my eye so I’m going to give this one a nod because I’m a big fan of the sport. My hope is that this game scratches that same itch that Tiger Woods Golf games used to give me.
