Leading this week’s salvo of new releases is Alabaster Dawn, an action-RPG that aims to blend fast-paced combat with exploration, while Better Than Dead delivers the kind of shootout destined to thrill fans of Hong Kong action cinema. Rob’s pick: I have a couple of indie picks for this week. TetherGeist has been pleasantly stealing my time with precision platforming and a bit of puzzling. As the title implies, you have a limited number of tethers that can float through floors and walls. When you let go of the action button, you instantly teleport there instantly. Naturally, there’s variance in abilities like activating platforms and obstacles that won’t let you phase into them. And there’s also stage design that gradually teaching you all of the game’s nuances. As someone who didn’t mesh with perfectionism of Celeste, I’m having a better time here.

I get it, not everyone likes genre multi-mashups. Like a recipe with a multitude of ingredients, it’s an acquired taste. This week Zombie Rollerz: The Last Ship brings it’s fusion of bullet heaven shooting, tower defense tactics, and roguelike power-ups and meta-game upgrades. Here, driving a giant ship, stacking on the weaponry, and gunning down legions of the undead simultaneously feels both fresh and familiar. It’s was solid on Steam Deck and the Switch 2 version performs pretty equivalently.

Ryan’s pick: A friend of mine had sent me the trailer for Better Than Dead earlier this week and was immediately drawn in by how hyper-realistic this FPS is. I like that it’s a tale of pure and simple brutal revenge as the protagonist storms through Hong Kong. Here’s to hoping this game will also propel other developers to continue to produce realistic games like this using the Unreal Engine 5. If you are a FPS fan this should definitely be on your radar.

Alabaster Dawn gets a quick shout this week for mixing 2.5D action RPG elements and art accents reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The developer Radical Fish Games is known for the popular 2D action RPG CrossCode, and from what I’ve seen so far from this game there is plenty of depth and polish. If you enjoyed A Link to the Past then please take a quick look at this one.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I have been waiting for a Battlestar Galactica game that finally does the right thing and focus on the difficulties in surviving when a hostile fleet of aliens is chasing you, meanwhile the citizens are starting to get unruly and no one really knows where things are going. Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes looks like it might finally be that game. I don’t want to get too excited because then I could be crushed by reality but… yeah, I’m excited.

I’m also quite keen to check out Blood: Refreshed Supply, because I never have played Blood, but based on the screenshots and ambiance, it does look like the rare kind of shooty thing that I like. So let’s see.
