This week, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar brings merchant life to Marvelous’ farming sim, Mina the Hollower delivers a Game Boy Color-era gothic adventure, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth finally makes the jump to Xbox Series S/X. Rob’s pick: Over the years, Story of Seasons has crafted the ultimate drip-feed of gratification, as you cultivate crops, raise livestock, and bask in the joys of digital agrarian life. This week’s release of Grand Bazaar adds a bit of retail fun to the familiar equation to Marvelous’ franchise, allowing you to sell your wares at the weekly bazaar. As an alternative to the dungeoneering/combat of Rune Factory, the mercantile business makes this one of my favorite Story of Seasons entries.

As someone who spends a disproportionate amount of time playing retro games, Yacht Club’s Mina the Hollower has several seductive enticements. Game Boy Color-era look and play? Vibrant gothic horror setting? A soundtrack from Jake Kaufman with two tracks from Yuzo Koshiro? With many of the big publishers steering gaming toward a cliff, I think it’s more important than ever to support indie teams. That should be easy this week given Mina the Hollower’s aspirations.

Ryan’s pick: Mina the Hollower is the clear winner this week for me for its spritework and animations. Admittedly I typically gravitate towards current-gen 3D games lately, but the colors, music, and gameplay have made this one stand out from other pixel games I’ve seen lately so I’m in. There’s also a bit of a juxtaposition of the cute mouse-like character mixed into a Victorian gothic horror world, so in general I think this one won’t disappoint if you are a 2D fan.

I wanted to quickly mention Dread Fields as the overall style and visuals are taking me back a few decades to my youth. It’s self-described as a slow-burn rural horror game and it appears like there also is some basic farming included. In general it looks like a horror game that slightly feels off with some early 2000’s FPS visuals, so I’m immediately drawn to it. I don’t think that it’s going to necessarily be a long journey, but it certainly looks like it’ll be odd.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): The second chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t just a stunning example of an open world RPG done well. It is that, but it also has a long beach scene where you get to enjoy Aerith and Tifa in swimsuits. And having that on the Switch 2 on the go is a wonderful thing indeed.

They’re very nice swimsuits. God bless Square Enix.

I’m also very much looking forward to eFootball Kick-Off! I’ve always been a much bigger fan of Konami’s spin on football to FIFA, even though the series has gone through some weird iterations and has never had the license power that EA has been able to command. With Crystal Palace actually achieving something this year I’m in a football mood, though, so this release is serendipity.
