Leading this week’s lineup of new releases is RUNNING TRAIN | 走ル列車！, leading a week of new game releases than range from the action of 007 First Light to an adaptation of Richard Garfield’s chaotic kaiju-brawling board game, King of Tokyo. Fights might also erupt across Bruisers 2D Boxing matches as well as Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II’s latest foray into grimdark tactics. Rob’s pick: The modern Bond game can be a literal license to kill. Both Bizarre Creations and Eurocom folded after disappointing sales of Blood Stone and 007 Legends, respectively. And while IO Interactive completely disappointed me with the always-online, “I don’t know what I’m buying” marketing of Hitman: World of Assassination, I’m hopeful that 007 First Light revisits the quality of Bond’s better outings.

IO understands stealth sandbox play better than almost anyone in this industry, and that should translate to a compelling Bond origin story. Early footage suggests a focus on cinematic spectacle rather than the slower-paced Hitman formula. But there’s still the thrill of adapting when things inevitably go south, and I always appreciate when a game puts me in that situation. Hopefully, the gunplay, high-octane racing, and espionage come together as smoothly as James and Vesper.

Ryan’s pick: I have high hopes for 007 First Light as I think that the Bond franchise fits pretty well with IO Interactive’s Glacier engine. The Hitman series always made me feel pretty vested and immersed in those games like I was a secret agent, so it feels pretty natural to be able to use their toolkit to be able to play as the iconic James. Even from the early 2000s there were so many ways to approach scenarios in the Hitman series, so I think that there is going to be some replay value with this one after the first playthrough. I have some hopes that there will even be some funny moments included depending on how you approach taking out the enemies.

I wanted to also mention Bruisers 2D Boxing as this easily could have been in the arcades in the 90s and would have attracted fighting game players as some matches produce copious amounts of blood on the mat. The thing I like about it is on the surface it looks like a simple boxer, but there’s actually a lot of different systems built into this one to make it feel a bit more like a RPG. It looks like there may be a bit of a learning curve, but I like that there is training and progress built into it rather than just working on pure timing and opponent weaknesses.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I’m really looking forward to giving King of Tokyo a whirl. Creator Richard Garfield is the guy who invented Magic: The Gathering, after all, so as someone who has been playing that card game for decades now, I am inherently interested in anything else that Garfield might turn his mind to. I’m a little disappointed that it seems like the game doesn’t have online multiplayer (okay, I’m very disappointed about this). That should be a requirement for any digital board game. But still the concept is great and the art looks fun.

I am also very interested in 007, of course. I win James Bond trivia competitions wherever I enter them. I’ve read all the books, and regularly re-watch the movies. I was also a massive fan of Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64, of course. I even liked the Quantum of Solace game back in the day. So I’m really hoping that IO Interactive does more than “Hitman, but with Bond” and really captures the unique qualities that make 007 distinctive and interesting. I think they’ll get there.
