Rob’s pick: As a kid, the only board game I really enjoyed was Scrabble. It gave this bookworm a chance to show off his vocabulary, and I was decent at finding point-boasting opportunities. So like Matt, Beyond Words is my pick of the week, which offers an interesting change of pace for Steve Ellis and David Doak, who worked on everything from the TimeSpitters series to that Nintendo 64 classic, Goldeneye. Essentially, it’s Scrabble but with roguelike powerups and the occasional obstacles that need to be circumvented. Just be aware that some of the challenges are tough, requiring you to earn some hefty point values.

Despite a bit of jank, Town of Zoz is an interesting blend of cooking, farming, and action RPG. Moonlighter is probably the closest point of comparison, so if you like these genre hybrids, it might be worth looking into after a few patches.

Ryan’s pick: REPLACED takes top position this week for me with some really impressive 2.5D graphics set in a dystopian cyberpunk future. Visually it immediately had me drawing parallels to Shadow Complex and the 2014 Strider game, but in terms of mechanics this one is closer to a story-driven platformer. Recently I’ve been chasing the RE:4 remake platinum, so having a slightly slower more story-driven game will hopefully help my nerves after all these S+ rank runs.

Two other releases this week that are both worth a quick look are TAMASHIKA and Gunboat God. The former is an FPS with an interesting stream of consciousness style of gameplay that varies visually as the game flow progresses. It is very surreal, which was what drew me in. Gunboat God is a sidescroller, and the art for this one was also very distinct, almost ink-like. It looks like it could take a minute to get used to the gameplay but overall looks engaging and has a unique premise.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): It’s a bit of a shovelware week overall, but Beyond Words has captivated me. I think that it is a bit excessive with the “roguelike” and playfield gimmicks when its greatest strength is that it is a moreish spin on Scrabble, but nonetheless the game has been tickling the wordsmith in me in the most entertaining way.

I’ll probably also give Demon Castle Story a go. It’s been a while since I got lost in a Kairosoft “simulator” for a few weeks, and I could use the easy playing and harmless loops for a bit.
