New Releases 2/8-2/14: Retro Rebirth Edition

This week, everything old is new again- from shooting zombies as Special Agent G, to clearing out the thugs that roam the Streets of Rage. Even those adorable (and presumably crazy) Rocos are back, giving PSP owners a reason to rejoice. There’s nearly enough retro goodness to make players overlook F.E.A.R. 2; which might be tragic, considering the polish displayed in the the recent Xbox Live demo.

DesertEagle’s Pick: At E3, it felt like love at first touch. Within seconds of playing the Japanese version of Retro Game Challenge, the game warmed my heart with its pseudo recreations of NES favorites. Although I have many of the Genesis tiles featured in Sonic’s Ultimate Collection on other compilations, the amount of old-school gaming goodness on the disk may be as bewitching as the siren’s call.

TideGear’s Picks: Some great releases this week! I dug the impressive AI and gunplay in the original F.E.A.R. but the game as a whole didn’t do much for me. I’ve been looking forward to F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin as it seems to take the formidable combat of the original and build a more interesting game around it. After playing the demo, I’m even more excited for it! Loco Roco 2 interests me as well but despite the fact Rolando for the iPhone borders on rip-off, it may just be a better game? Still, I’m not saying LR2 won’t be great! Lastly, y’all know me… Retro Game Challenge is made just for retro junkies like me! Give me an inch, though, and I want a mile! Bring the show over, too, please! After those, there are some other potentially cool games coming out. We’ll see what sticks!

  17. It has solid FPS mechanics, and Mechs that pulverize enemies, ripping them apart with bullets 🙂

    For me the scary parts weren’t particularly compelling, but I’m hoping that will change in the full game.

    Actually, I grew up on NES; this game just captures the culture of that time period. Perhaps for younger gamers the appeal may be missing. Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

  19. Yes, I neglected that one as my pick- but, there are some really good choices this week.

    I do own the first game, but embarrassingly I’ve never opened the box.

  24. Loco Roco 2, Retro Game Challenge, and Sonic Collection. Only about $80 for all that gaming!!!

  25. I remember a PS1 game that had WWF wrestlers fighting in cars. That was truly WTF material.
