Rob’s pick: One of my favorite 3DS curios was Yasumi Matsuno’s Crimson Shroud, which shirked current role-playing mechanics to deliver an experience that felt like using graph paper and figurines in a tabletop Dungeons & Dragon campaign. Voice of Cards riffed on the idea, leaning on storytelling and most recently Marisa of Liartop Mountain made it feel like you were gathered around with the Gensokyo gals. This week, Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked lets you bring a trio with you for some accelerated turn-based fighting. Of course, I’ll be enjoying some role-playing solitude, so I hope Resolution Games scales the stats accordingly. (edit: they did!)
I’ve loved Bubble Bobble since the infectious soundtrack first got lodged in my head. I don’t see myself giving up on the dinos anytime soon. As such, I’ll probably be taking Sugar Dungeons for a spin, which also includes a port of Bubble Symphony, which I never got a chance to play. Ryan’s mention of tethered takedowns in Cleared Hot reminds me of the time I took down most of the tan force in Army Men: Air Attack with pebbles.

Ryan’s pick: MicroProse knows exactly what I like, and that’s helicopter shooters with an isometric view. Cleared Hot gets the tipping of the hat this week for bringing a new modernized helicopter shooter like Desert Strike. The game’s physics seems pretty intuitive and has me interested as I think it will allow me to be a bit nimbler in case the game decides to include those forsaken missile firing rapier towers like in EA’s games. It also appears you can swing objects that are tethered into the chopper into enemies and structures, so in general this one should keep me busy for quite some time.
Two additional Steam games get a brief mention this week for being a bit more light-hearted. The first is Bubble Bobble Symphony. This series has a ton of nostalgia for me and I still remember how infectiously cute the main theme song was for the game on NES. The games keep things pretty light, and overall the vibrant color scheme and level variation will keep you engaged with minimal frustration. The final mention goes to ZAKO NO AHIRU which is a 2D game where you maneuver a small 2D duck around obstacles and puzzles as a small impish girl looks down on you and critiques your mistakes. This one appears like a must for masochists, bringing an impressive 800 different japes and put-downs.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): While I’ll always be in the corner of Snow Bros., I do love my single screen platformer, and for that reason I’m looking forward to BUBBLE BOBBLE Sugar Dungeons. I’m going into it very fresh and with no idea what the game will offer, but surely they can’t screw up something this beautifully simple and elegant.
I’m also interested in checking out Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, which looks like the Dungeons & Dragons property to a tabletop board game style of combat. The D & D formula has had its highs and (very, very) lows, so I’m also hoping that this game makes up for the last time I gave D & D a go (it was that Drizzt Do’Urden thing that was an absolute travesty). Also, I agree with Rob. Crimson Shroud was such a brilliant experience and I’ve been hoping that they bring that to other platforms. If Battlemarked can even come close to that I’ll be so happy.

Mike’s pick: I’ve replayed R-Type Delta enough times to know exactly which wave of Bydo baddies are waiting behind every corner, but the idea of an HD Boosted version has be interested. There’s just something about that era of late-PS1 weird, moody sci-fi that gets be going, and seeing those chunky ships and oversized polygonal boss designs with a fresh coat of polish seems like a great way to welcome the arrival of my new Steam Deck. If M2 gives us a museum mode, I’m basically going off-grid this week.
And speaking of airborne dangers, Ryan’s enthusiasm for Cleared Hot has me intrigued. I wasn’t expecting a modern helicopter shooter to capture that same prowling the battlefield energy of the Desert Strike days, but the tether-swinging physics alone look cool enough to justify a sortie or two. Hopefully, I don’t have to worry about fuel, as they took down my air fleet during the 16-bit era. RIP guys.

Not the usual kind of art this week. You’re slipping.
