Rob’s pick: FRONT MISSION 3: Remake is the latest entry in a series of remakes that has divided its fans. The original games earned praise for their tactical combat and mech customization, even if their protracted pacing and uneven storylines held the titles back. As with the previous two entries, FM3 Remake updates the graphics and streamlines some of the more antiquated mechanics. But I’d expect players to wrestle with the familiar frustrations of the first two remakes. Despite these flaws, I appreciate the world-building, mech designs, and branching storylines, so MAYBE I’ll get back into a Wanzers cockpit this week.

Don’t Stop, Girlypop! is a pastel-soaked, high-energy, title that strives to deliver a wealth of arena-style FPS action. The game’s fluid, momentum‑driven mechanics require you to keep a breakneck pace and not let up, so check out the Steam demo to see if this is your kind of bubblegum chaos.

Ryan’s pick: I recently was watching a free climbing documentary, so the survival climber Cairn gets the official pick this week. The thing I’m most interested in for this one is simulated climbing mechanics, as it seems pretty intuitive. As a Genshin Impact fan I immediately was drawn to the cel-shaded art, and with all the climbing I’ve done in that game Cairn feels like it will be a good fit. The only bad part is you can’t jump off and safely float downwards in this one, so I’m thinking there will be some definite nail-biting moments during the climbs.

I’m a big fan of R.E.P.O. and this week the co-op horror game YAPYAP reminds me a bit of that game but with a twist. You play as a team of wizards set out to vandalize a rival wizard’s tower and as you infiltrate it, you also will encounter beasts and monsters. The part that I’m most interested in is the ability for players to use their voices to cast incantations, which sounds like absolute levity. The voice manipulation that R.E.P.O. has really made me laugh a lot when I played the game with my brother, so I’m also going to pick this one up in hopes that it has a similar setup.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): It is so impressive just how good Final Fantasy VII Remake actually looks on the Switch. Without a doubt the best effort we’ve seen to port a big game to the console to date, and the fact it happens to be such a good game is icing on the cake. I don’t for a second regret double-dipping, even if I will never forgive Square Enix for what they did to Jessie, and neither will you.

Another game that you absolutely shouldn’t sleep on is DUSK GION. Developed by the same person who was behind Tokyo Dark, this is a brilliantly written visual novel about a very real consequence to our increasing obsession with using technology to retreat into our own little worlds. Real games as art stuff.
