Meanwhile, HimaNatsu: Of Churches, Sunflowers, and Long Summers (pictured) delivers a bittersweet visual novel about childhood friends, old promises, and one final summer together. Rob’s pick: Few RPG settings are as interesting as Crossbell, which makes The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero / The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure an easy choice this week. Trails from Zero introduces detective Lloyd Bannings and the Special Support Section through some fairly standard police work. Exploring districts and residents provides plot as well as intrigue. And yes, it can be just a bit slow.

Largely, Trails to Azure rewards your patience by escalating local corruption into a conflict of nations, complete with plenty of clandestine plans, and some revelatory moments. Yes, they’re dialogue-heavy games, but experiencing them together allows you to relish the connections and ultimately, some of the emotional payoffs can hit a bit harder. Thankfully, the turn-based combat has aged gracefully from the PSP days, tasking you with everything from positioning and turn order with nuances like Quartz, potent Arts, and dramatic Crafts providing advantages.

Outside of Crossbell, I’ll also be spending time in Akihabara, thanks to the six missing maidens in AKIBA LOST. Sweet Hamster Days recently reminded me that some FMV games might resemble harem romps, but they can also hide an unexpectedly absorbing storytelling beneath the mild flirtation. Lastly, Another Eden Begins is providing a lot of retro JRPG enjoyment. I’m happy that the title was pulled from mobile-game purgatory.

Ryan’s pick: I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls lately and honestly it’s been a really good way to reconnect with the X-Men series. Marvel’s Wolverine gets the official seal this week as the trailer for it was pretty impressive with the combat and in general looks pretty intense. Like most kids in the 90s’ Wolverine was my favorite, so being able to play a current-gen game with him in the spotlight is pretty much ideal in my book. In terms of violence some of the attacks you can perform can be quite graphic, but after playing Onimusha: Way of the Sword lately I don’t think it will be too jarring of a transition.

Staying with the theme of violence, over the past couple of years a friend and I have been playing FPS PSVR2 games and really had a great time playing Arizona Sunshine 2. The VR game Gunman Contracts is absolutely something I can see us taking turns playing. It reminds me a bit of a John Wick style FPS action-movie game with cinematic slowdowns and intense shootouts. If you are a VR fan I think this one is worth a quick look.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I’m very interested in Akiba Lost. I’ve only played one of the developer’s other titles (Death Come True), but I utterly loved that, and it looks like Akiba Lost will build on the experience from making that game, as far as interactive FMV titles go. Also the cast is pretty damn impressive. This could be a real iconic example of what can be achieved with a “big budget FMV title”

I’m also really, REALLY excited for Flamecraft, the latest digital board game adaptation by the studio that gave us Wingspan. I’ve heard really good things about Flamecraft as a board game, and Wingspan… well, I’ve played more than 2000 hours of Wingspan now. This developer really knows its stuff. I’m hoping that Flamecraft can broaden the game night rotation a little bit.
