Fire and Reign- Hoard Review

Hoard is a game that lets you control a dragon – a dragon that burns down castles and kidnaps princesses. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t need 1000 words to tell me that I like fire, larceny and dragons,” but humor me and keep reading while you wait for it to finish downloading.

Hoard is conceptually very simple: a score-attack style game where you control a dragon from an overhead perspective, with a goal to destroy farms, villages and castles and collect the gold your hoard.  The gold you collect can be used to upgrade your dragon’s speed, fire breath, carrying capacity and defense, all of which help you collect more gold. The monotony of collection for the sake of streamlining future collection is broken up by spontaneous hazards to impede your progress. Archers, knights, thieves and opposing dragons all seek to ground your dragon. The only penalty for dying is that you are forced to drop any gold you are carrying and wait at your hoard for a few seconds while you heal, but that few seconds could be thousands of points lost in a timed match.

Simple, dual-stick controls and a very simple goal mix with light strategy to make Hoard one of the more addicting games on the PlayStation Network. In addition to burning down buildings for gold, players can opt to terrorize villages until they produce regular offerings to their scaly oppressors. Once a village fears your dragon, your attention becomes split between collecting gold and defending your villages from other dragons and ogres.  Occasionally, a royal carriage will pop up, carrying a princess rather than the typical gold. Grabbing the princess will raise the attention of any knights on the map, but if you can hold onto her for long enough, you will reap serious rewards.

There are four modes of play in Hoard, each a slight variation on the basic score-attack rules.  One pits you against another dragon to see who can steal the most princesses, while another has you cooperating with other dragons to collect one massive hoard. Each minor variant calls for a completely different style of play, which keeps the game fresh. Add to that the fact that three of the four modes are available for online multiplayer, and your dragon flying days seem to stretch pretty far into the future.

If you couldn’t discern from the past few paragraphs, I really enjoy Hoard, but I would be remiss if I skipped over a few negative points. For example, the sound design is absolutely terrible. I can only imagine that Big Sandwich Games dug to the bottom of the public domain sound barrel to pick out the bland clicks and bloops that try so hard to suck the character out of the game. The sound track made me relive my weeks lost gambling real money away in casinos, rather than imagining dragons terrorizing a fantasy world for fantasy gold. Also, the game has a tendency to slow down significantly after leveling up, but regains speed after only a moment. All though these points are worth noting, since I am a consumer advocate, they are by no means game-breaking.

So if you didn’t rush to your PS3 when I said the word “dragon” the first time, by all means do it now.  Hoard is an incredibly addictive and fun game, and I’d like to see more people playing it online. Big Sandwich Games will be releasing a patch soon to correct some technical issues (hopefully the one listed above) as well as adding new content. They’ve pledged their commitment to the game, so hopefully it will have some legs.

  1. I might have liked it better it it was called “Whored” 🙂

Sounds like another one of those small PSN winners.

  2. That dragon symbol is the second pic reminds me of a certain game. I cant quite place it. Help me guys.

    (Yeah, that one!)

  3. can you spin the camera around or is it always at the slightly bent perspective?

  4. Dear Sony,

MS has offered demo with every DLC game. Now, Nintendo is offering them. Step up your game.

    Love,
    TJ

PS. How about some new Move games so the controller doesn’t just die?

  5. So the real question is: how fun is the game for a single player?

  6. Waiting for the patch…

    According to Joystiq

“In addition to the text size fix, there will be a new option to restart the game both on the pause menu and the game over screen, allowing players to more quickly replay a map rather than having to go back through the options. There will also be a persistent multiplayer lobby (so you won’t have to invite friends after every match), and there’s a brand new Hoard mode map included in the patch for free.”

  7. The look (on a table top) reminds me of Toy Soldiers, or a couple other Tower Defense games I’ve played.

  8. So NOLA you were “USER”, was TideGear and Desert playing as “Genghis”, “Mr. Honorable” or “Casanova”? 🙂

  9. How about a 360 version?!?

  10. Need ‘moar’ anime girls with guns. I kid, just remarking on your new design. Looks good, BTW. real clean.

  11. @Nola thanks for the review, but shame on you for putting that damn song (“Fire and Rain” in my head. 2 month of cleaning dragon dung is your punishment.

  12. Thats what I thought as well when I first saw the screenshots.

  13. Hey, NOLA how come you just review the PS3 games? Are you trying to be the next Shane “Sony fanboy” Bettenhausen or what?

Try a Xbox game- It wont kill you.

  14. Is there a “horde” mode?

    I had to ask…

  15. There’s no 360 version planned, but I think this could work for PSP. Make it happen, “Sandwich Artists”

  16. Thanks NOLA. Sounds like something I might enjoy. And I’m not even a Dragon nerd.

  17. I had to laugh at this.

  18. I can wait for a half price sale on this one.

  19. Yeah, every game should have a demo. I bet the ones with demos sell better.

  20. When is the ETA on the patch?

  21. “All though these points are worth noting”

    Did you mean Although?

  22. I bought it a few weeks ago. I didn’t like it much. I guess you could say I’m bored with Hoard.

  23. I review portables and Sony DLC. That’s just how we divide the workload. I have nothing against XBOX, but DEagle’s got that on lock.

But I do love Mr. Bettenhausen.

  24. Deagle’s got the game world on lock. I still don’t know how he has time to review/play as many games as he does.

  25. You guys should add the price somewhere in your review.

  26. Good review Nola, I think there be Dragon in my future.

  27. Teach has got some nice stripper moves there.

  28. how come you guys don’t do double (two person reviews) anymore?

  29. If i get any PSN points for xmas, I’ll probably pick it up.

  30. Thanks for the review Sean “2N” NOLA!
