Brave the Cave- Graviton Reviewed

Gravitron for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Developer: Virtway, Publisher: Chillingo

What’s
so fascinating about a post-apocalyptic setting? It’s a complete
destruction of the tedious factors in life. It’s a reversion to a life
similar to that of primitive man. It’s a great setting for one person
to become a savior to many, or to do the opposite. It’s a setting where
choices become more clear, much more black and white. Graviton is a game that gives you a simple but mysterious task in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Graviton is a cave-flyer action/puzzle game for the iPhone/Touch. Cave-flyer games follow in the footsteps of games like Gravitar and Thrust,
and often feature delicate ships trying to carefully navigate
low-gravity environments by utilizing thrust, gravity and momentum. The
upcoming PixelJunk Shooter is an interesting new take on the cave-flyer subgenre. Graviton is essentially a Thrust
clone. Your sole mission in each level is to find a small orb and
transport it through tight and hazardous caves, via tow-cable, to a
platform deep within the caves. There’s currently no noticeable
storyline implemented but that will change with the upcoming v1.1.

Graviton
utilizes the iPhone/Touch’s accelerometer but it just doesn’t work very
well. The calibration gives you no chance to decide when you’re ready
and the motion control’s dead zone is much to large. This means you
have move your device a lot just to start moving in a direction, but
once you reach that point, the ship accelerates much too quickly. It’s
not broken and you can get used to this but, even having beaten normal
mode, I never really felt like it “clicked”. Touching the edges of the
screen to boost works well, but tapping the ship to drop the orb is a
bit too finicky.

Graviton‘s main selling points seem to
be its large 3D rendered levels and its puzzles spread throughout.
Sometimes you’ll have to move quickly and accurately and sometimes
you’ll have to carefully plan out your actions, due to the various
hazards. While the game is fairly successful in these areas, the 3D
graphics are a bit primitive with odd design choices. (I’m inside some
huge beast’s bowls, but I can see the outside in the background?)
There’s some basic physics implemented but it’s not really used for
anything too interesting and feels scripted at times. The puzzles in
the game were rarely challenging. It was more a matter of jumping
through their hoops than solving them.

Unfortunately, Graviton
is just too generic and short with only 5 levels. While you can compare
scores online, I didn’t feel much desire to return to the game, even
for hard mode. For the $1.99 USD price, if you want a cave-flyer, your
time and money is probably much better spent with Dropship. If you have a PC, try Gravitron 2 (also on Steam). If you have a PS3, watch out for PixelJunk Shooter.

  1. Love those rhyming titles. Not so keen on those iphone reviews. LOL.

  2. Are the game and the PC sequel related in any way?

  3. Textures looks nice, but geometry doesn’t.

  4. Looks really so-so from the images. Hows the framerate?

  5. Chillingo’s games are almost always pretty good, sad to hear about this one.

  6. Sad there weren’t more levels.

  7. I prefer Digital Chocolate. Except for their Miniputt game, most of their apps are pretty damn good.

  8. Seems ok.

  9. Is there a ‘lite’ version?

  10. I like those flying around caves games, so I might give it a try. Shame about the controls, though.

  11. I think this type of game would work better with Gravitron 2 style graphics.

  12. When does 1.1 come out, and will you guys be in the credits?

  13. I’m still holding out for a VC or XBLA release of Subterrania.

  14. Pat, you’re a man after my cold, diminutive heart 😉

  15. I didn’t see any kind of demo on the itunes store.

  16. LOL. Now, I got to play that game!

  17. EA’s stuiff is some of the best Iphone games. Period.

Oh, no no, PixelJunk Shooter, Graviton, and Gravitron 2 (notice the “r”) are actually completely unrelated. They share similar gameplay but are made by different people.

Actually I recall the framerate being pretty solid.

Fair enough! We’re actually going to reduce the amount of iPhone/Touch reviews we do soon. We’ll still do them, just less frequently.

  22. Just as Apple reduced the price of the phone to $99? Smart move 😉

  23. Now I have to play this one and see what the fuss is about.

  24. IMHO, this one is pretty and fun too. Even the tilt controls works pretty well (but forget the easy mode, play medium… easy haven’t enough sensitivity). The pitty is about is short… but for less than 2$ I think it work its price.
