This week, we’ll drown our sorrows with a bottle of Mountain Dew, and in TideGear’s case, Dr. Pepper, as Line Rider 2: Unleashed was due this week, but pushed back another month. After spending weeks with the PC version, we were eagerly awaiting the sequel.
Even more disappointing is what has become of Bangai-O Spirits. Once, our favorite Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast game, this update is a sorry imitation of the original’s frenzied shoot-and-scoot gameplay. Pigskin fans can at least take solace that Madden NFL 09 will be available for every system except PCs.

Pick of the Week: While Madden NFL 09 will surely sell a ton of units, we’ve grown a bit wary of the lack of innovation within the franchise; we’ll enjoy last year’s edition until the inevitable price drop of ’09. Clearly, the high point of this week is the update to Bionic Commando. While 360 and PS3 owners can enjoy the reasonable ten dollar price for this, PC owners will have to ante up fifteen dollars for the purchase via Steam.

Still better than last week. Madden for me; I know better but I cant resist.

Bangai-O and Bionic Commando seem the most interesting, but it’s just re-treading old ground.
Everybody knows better than to try to compete with Madden, so if you don’t like football, you’re out of luck for at least a week.

I personally dig Bangai-O Spirits a lot! It’s almost a spin-off that turns the game into a puzzler. You die regularly in spectacular ways and slowly figure out what weapons to use and when and how. There’s plenty of Treasure’s crazy trademark way-too-many-sprites-isn’t-enough moments that prove the DS can be a 2D powerhouse.
It’s a fun, great-looking game!
Actually, Bangai-O Spirits has the core gameplay but handles the overall game structure differently (see my comment below) in the form of a ton of crazy “How on Earth will I survive this one!?” challenge stages. Oh, and two words… stage editor. Yes, indeed! I’m not sure what DE’s complaints are but he and I are bound to disagree. Maybe he’s trying to navigate the Japanese version?

Full disclosure- Bangai-o for the Dreamcast is probably my favorite game of all time. It’s mix of dealing with gravity, while blasting everything around you was simply perfection.
Bangai-o Spirits as you mentioned messed with that formula, and made my favorite twitch arcade game into a puzzler. Most dilemmas have a single solution, and while I don’t mind putting on my thinking cap for a game; I want my Bangai-o to be a straight-up mindless, frenzied shooter.
Too. Many. Madden. Games. BAH EA needs to stop already. I know its not best for the business, but you should buy one Madden game and just pay a few bucks to download the updated roster or something.
Just did a search on Bangaio and found this site. I wanted to say I completely agree. The new version is a completely different game, and fans of the original game will be disappointed.
Other looks for a puzzle game may like it, but I think its Treasure cashing in.
I’m loving it’- Desert despises the game, while tide loves it. Classic Ebert-Siskel debate coming!

Ugh, I cant express how much I hate madden. Well at least we got some good XBLA releases. Next week will definitely be better with N+ coming out for DS and PSP.

I’m not excited for madden at all, I hate that franchise. I am however excited for a ds game for once. I keep hearing good things about Bangai-O Spirits.
