Rune Factory tends the fields, while Kiryu breaks some necks

This week’s new releases span everything from notable sequels, genre staples, to the ever-present flood of shovelware. Headlining the slate is Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (pictured), which looks poised to pull life-sim devotees in with its picturesque setting. It’s joined by Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, which continues Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s methodical modernization of Kazuma Kiryu’s early years. Rob’s pick: Save for the unfortunate decision to lock Cuilang and Pilika’s routes behind a paywall, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma was one of my favorite titles of 2025. After years of inheriting rustic farms, tending to rice fields, and walking through lantern-lit villages offered a pleasing reprieve. Best of all, it didn’t feel like you were just trying to chase success or romance. Instead, you were a catalyst of renewal and hope. So, if you didn’t get to play the Switch 2 or PC versions, now is your chance to give the world a bit of a healing.
And while I largely agree with Shane’s take on Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, I was even less engaged by Mine and Kanda’s interactions. I feel like many of the cutscenes were missed opportunities, which is something I don’t usually feel with the mainline series. That said, my thirst for random ass-kickings and playing Game Gear, Model 3 and NAOMI games hasn’t been quenched, making this a potential recommendation if you don’t own the original.

Ryan’s pick: This week’s clear winner for me is Mario Tennis Fever. I have always loved the Top Spin series for being pretty easy to pick up to get into and then later on begins to ramp up in difficulty, and I think that this new tennis game is very much like that. The fever shot and fever rackets also sound like they could keep difficulty balanced, and with 38 unlockable characters I can see a lot of replay value. I always liked the Smash Bros. series for the challenge levels they had, and I’m hoping that the new Trial Towers will be similar in terms of difficulty. I definitely won’t be playing this one competitively online however, as I typically only play these games in single player mode. I’ve been looking for a brand-new game to hold me over until Resident Evil: Requiem and Fate Trigger and I think this is a good candidate.
I wanted to offer a quick nod to FUR Squadron Phoenix for being a vibrant and flashy StarFox-esque space shooter. This one is a roguelite, so I can see some decent replayability and freshness for it as you try and unlock new weapons. The game also touts massive bosses, so count me in. The bright visuals and contrasts were the first thing I noticed about the game, so I think this one could be a good one to watch.

Mario Tennis Fever is $70? Nintendo greed is killing it.
