Rob’s pick: Growing up, I was into ninjas like most kids were into dinosaurs. My clique read books about ninjutsu (that were far more mythical than factual), while I was into any game that involved being a stealthy assassin. Yes, I called Toys ‘R Us daily when Tenchu was expected to arrive in stores and played it religiously once I finally got my sticky little hands on it. Naturally, I also loved SEGA’s side scrollers, whether it was Shinobi in arcades or Shadow Dancer, The Revenge of Shinobi, and Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi on Genesis. I even had the version where bootleg Spider-Man turned into Batman.

As such, I’m hyped for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. It probably won’t draw the attention of IP attorneys this time, but the fluid play, level design, and flowing combat are in my cross-hairs. I especially like the rhythm of shuriken tossing, which is obligatory for any modern adaptation of the property. And yes, I’d love to see Altered Beast get the same treatment. I promise to howl like a maniac during every animal transition, just like the old days. AHHHH-WOOOOOOOOO!

Ryan’s pick: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was my absolute favorite in the series so I’m absolutely going with the remake for this week’s pick. The game appealed to me on so many levels and I really had a lot of fun trying to unlock each of the boss’s skins as well as all the kerotan frogs hidden throughout the game. There were so many easter eggs in this game that I don’t really think I even got half of them, so I think it’s a perfect time to go back and play the game through again to try and see it all.

The Shinobi series had a presence in all the arcades in the 90s and made its way to household consoles which was where I really started to enjoy it. I definitely still recall playing the original in the arcades and liking it enough that I decided to ask for Shadow Dancer for my birthday for the Genesis. A close friend of mine then had Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master which equally saw a lot of screentime. This series is brimming with nostalgia for me and with SEGA involved in development I’m thinking this is a must have.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I’ve never played a Super Robot Wars title. A lot of people recommend them to me, but I’ve never had the chance to sit down with one. So, this will be a big treat for me, as I do expect that I’ll enjoy it a lot.

The other recommendation from me this week is Metal Gear Solid Delta. It might not be the end-to-end remake that Silent Hill 2 was, but it is a gorgeous upscale of one of the true works of art in video games. And hey, don’t fix what’s not broken, right?
