Rob’s pick: If you don’t mind the lack of historical materials, the two Toaplan Arcade Collections catalog the bulk of the developer’s body of work. The emulation is solid, the accessibility options ample, so I just wish that Bitwave would have made a single, cohesive collection instead of splitting the anthology up. The day physical museums adopt this marketing practice will been when I’ll head to the hills to live with wolves.

Yes, I know cozy sims are nearly as ubiquitous as internet brainrot. But Discounty’s task of running a store in small town offers a nice break from the typical agrarian duties. Oddly, the daily routine of putting in the nightly orders, stocking the store, and ringing up customers has a soothing rhythm and a bit of deviation from things. For now, this might be the best interactive equivalent of Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Shantae! Shantae is back! I love Shantae so much. It’s not like we get that many games set in a very 1001 Arabian Nights setting, complete with sexy genies and exotic adventures. It’s an incredibly underused fantasy setting while developers continue to reach for the same grim European fantasy over and over and over again. I like European fantasy too, but sometimes you just want a different flavour to vanilla, ya know? But on the other hand, that dearth of Arabian Nights stuff just means Shantae gets to stand out, and I really can’t wait to give Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution a spin. Especially since this was very nearly a lost game (it started life as a Game Boy Advance project but was cancelled and is only getting its first-ever release now).

I’m also very keen on Iwakura Aria, which was billed as belonging to the same tradition as Raging Loop and House in Fata Morgana and… yeah, if you liked those horror visual novels, you’re going to want to give this one a go too.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

One Comment

  1. I thought I had read that Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution was getting a launch discount.
